The artificial pollution test procedures specified in this standard are applicable to insulators for DC overhead lines, substation insulators and traction lines, as well as bushings with suitable protection against internal damage and hollow core insulators for other equipment. When these procedures are applied to equipment incorporating hollow insulators, the technical committee concerned shall consider the effect on internal installations and the possible need for special protective equipment. This standard applies to the determination of the resistance characteristics of porcelain and glass insulation used outdoors in DC systems with a voltage of ±1000V to ±800kV and exposed to dirty environments. These experiments cannot be directly applied to fabricated insulators of organic materials, composite insulators, insulators coated with grease, or special types of insulators (semiconductor glaze insulators or insulators covered with any organic material).
