Scope
This part of GB/T 2406 describes the determination method of the minimum oxygen concentration required to just maintain the combustion of the sample in the mixed flow of oxygen and nitrogen under the specified test conditions, and the result is defined as the oxygen index. This section applies to strip or sheet materials whose thickness is less than 10.5 mm and can stand upright and self-supporting. Also suitable for homogeneous solid materials, laminates or foams with an apparent density greater than 100 kg/m3 and certain foams with an apparent density less than 100 kg/m3. It also provides test methods for sheet materials or films that can be supported upright. For comparison, this section also provides a method for determining whether the oxygen index of a certain material is higher than a given value. The oxygen index value obtained by this method can provide a sensitivity scale of the combustion characteristics of materials under certain controlled laboratory conditions, and can be used for quality control. The results obtained depend on the shape, orientation and insulation of the specimen and the ignition conditions. For special materials or special purposes, different test conditions need to be specified. The results obtained for different thicknesses and different ignition modes are not comparable and do not correlate with combustion behavior under other ignition conditions. The results obtained in this part cannot be used to describe or evaluate the fire hazard presented by a specific material or a specific shape under actual fire conditions, but can only be used as an element to evaluate a certain fire hazard. One of all relevant factors for fire hazard assessment in a particular application.
