This test method provides controlled environments which are utilized to produce corrosion of metal, metal-coated, or nonmetallic-coated smooth or deformed shank driven fasteners in contact with treated wood exposed to the given test environments. The test method provides information that can be used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of metal, metal-coated, or nonmetallic-coated smooth or deformed shank driven fasteners in contact with different chemical wood treatments. The results shall be used for comparative purposes only and they shall not be correlated to exposure time in natural environments. The reproducibility of results in these types of tests is highly dependent on the type of samples tested and the evaluation criteria selected, as well as the control of the operating variables.1.1 This test method covers and focuses on the corrosion resistance of metal, metal-coated, and nonmetallic-coated smooth and deformed shank driven fasteners in contact with treated wood in exterior or high moisture exposure applications using comparative tests with control fastener specimens of standardized benchmarks. This test method may be used for preservative-treated wood. 1.2 This test method describes the apparatus, procedure, and conditions required to maintain test environments for the Cyclic Fog Test and the Steady State Moisture Test. 1.3 This test method describes the types of test samples, lists exposure periods, and gives guidance on interpretation of results. 1.4 Until experience is gained comparing laboratory-to-laboratory results with this test method, comparisons of fasteners, coatings, materials, or preservatives shall be made only within the results of the same test. 1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values in parentheses are for information only. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This guide covers test procedures for performing accelerated tests to evaluate relative corrosion resistance of various coatings applied to mechanical fasteners. Corrosion mechanisms such as general and crevice corrosion may be evaluated with this method. Test duration may be selected to achieve any desired level of corrosion exposure and provides a frame of reference to determine relative coating resistance to corrosion. Fasteners tightened to a desired tension and subjected to this test procedure may be evaluated to simulate a variety of service conditions. Without large amounts of accumulated field results, it is difficult to relate test duration or the number of test cycles to actual service life for a given application. 1.2 This standard is not intended to cover tests of driven fasteners such as nails, staples, screws and lag bolts. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This quality focused Standard establishes in-process and final inspection requirements for fastener products as well as a receiving inspection plan for fastener purchasers. The Standard identifies four categories, recognizing that fastener users have widely varying requirements. In the preparation of this standard it was recognized that its function must enable it to be a part of the various regimens in use today that attain certain quality levels of products. This standard was written to encompass frameworks that enable the user to pinpoint which approach they wish to use in meeting their own objectives. This standard places a C=0 expectations on the sample plans shown herein, and the sample sizes are smaller for that reason. However it should be recognized that zero nonconformities in a sampling does not necessarily mean that the population was entirely free of defects. This standard recognizes that some well established standards may continue to use C=1 or higher acceptance numbers, and that their sample sizes are higher as a result. When the consumer prefers to use those plans that constitute their requirements, their plans can supersede the sample sizes herein. However the quality expectation of C=0 is still required. Statistical process control and other variation lowering measures can significantly reduce the number of nonconformities in the population that may be produced, but it should be noted that statistical indices only imply the quality level produced, and improperly applied statistical treatments will imply the presence of nonconformities that are not present, or miss some deficiencies altogether. The closest that one can approach the zero population deficiencies state is in 100% part per part examination, but again caution must be exercised. The goal of zero here can be intractable and - the complexity of resources required, - the limitations of the available equipment for each verified characteristic, - the stringency of controls required, will only be able to demonstrate quality on a parts per million basis, and not necessarily any assurance of zero deficiencies.

1.1 This specification covers two types of heat treated, steel, tension control bolt-nut-washer assemblies, also referred to as “sets,” having a tensile strength of 150 to 173 ksi. These assemblies are capable of developing a minimum predetermined tension when installed by applying torque to the nut, while at the same time applying a counter torque to separate the spline end from the body of the bolt using an appropriate spline drive installation tool. 1.2 An assembly consists of a tension control bolt with spline end (covered by this specification) and a suitable nut and washer covered by reference to applicable ASTM specifications. 1.3 The fastener assemblies are intended for use in structural connections. These connections, installation procedures, and the use of alternate design structural bolts are covered under the requirements of the “Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM or A490 Bolts”, approved by the Research Council on Structural Connections. 1.4 The assemblies are available with either round (button or dome) heads, heavy hex structural heads, or alternate design heads described in Section 11 , in sizes ½ to 1 1/8 in. inclusive, in two types specified in Section 4. 1.5 Tension control bolts manufactured and marked in accordance with the requirements of Specification A490, and conforming to the dimensional and other requirements of this specification, will be considered an acceptable alternate under this specification for two years following initial publication. 1.6 The following precautionary statement pertains only to the test method portions, Sections 15 and 16, of this Specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This specification covers stainless and alloy-steel bolting specially heat treated for high-temperature service, such as steam turbine, gas turbine, and similar uses. See Specification for the definition of bolting. This material requires special processing and should not be used in general-purpose applications. Bolting furnished as bars shall be hot wrought and may be further processed by centerless grinding or by cold drawing. 1.2 The high-temperature properties of the bolting covered by this specification are dependent upon special heat treatment, which is required. Although the high-temperature properties are not specified, they are implied by control of the chemistry, heat treatment, and room-temperature properties of the material. 1.3 Three levels of bolting strength are covered, designated Grades B4B, B4C, and B4D. 1.4 The following referenced general requirements are indispensable for application of this specification: Specification . 1.5 Supplementary requirements are provided for use at the option of the purchaser. The supplementary requirements shall apply only when specified individually by the purchaser in the purchase order or contract. 1.6 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units; however, unless the purchase order or contract specifies the applicable M specification designation (SI units), the inch-pound units shall apply. 1.7 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
