This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) describes the general operating principles of demand oxygen equipment, including variant types such as diluter-demand and pressure breathing equipment. The sources of oxygen supply that can be used in connection with a demand oxygen mask are in principle the same as those used for other oxygen dispensing devices. Except for mention of a few features specifically related to demand equipment, this document does not discuss oxygen sources in detail and the reader is advised to consult other applicable documents that describe the operation of oxygen sources for additional information.

Closed-cycle protective breathing apparatus, commonly referred to as rebreathers, or CCBA provide trained aircrew members or ground personnel with eye and respiratory protection from toxic atmospheres. The purpose of this AIR is to describe the static and dynamic characteristics of closed circuit breathing apparatus. Considerable design consideration must be given to ensure conservation of, or removal of, vital respiratory gases in closed cycle breathing apparatus. Descriptions and illustrations are included that represent the basic flow paths of respiratory gases during operation. For more specific information on certain topics, references are also cited in the text, where applicable.

This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides an orientation regarding the general technology of chemical oxygen generators to aircraft engineers for assistance in determining whether chemical oxygen generators are an appropriate oxygen supply source for hypoxia protection in a given application and as an aid in specifying such generators. Information regarding the details of design and manufacture of chemical oxygen generators is generally beyond the scope of this document.

This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides general information to aircraft engineers, regarding the types of Protective Breathing Equipment (PBE) configurations which are available, the intended functions of such equipment, and the technical approaches which may be used in accomplishing these functions. The term "PBE' or "Protective Breathing Equipment' has been used to refer to various types of equipment, which are used in a variety of applications. This way of using the terminology has been a source of confusion in the aviation industry. One objective of this AIR is to assist the reader in distinguishing between the types of PBE applications. A further objective is to assist in understanding the technical approaches which can be used in each of the major applications. Principles of PBE design are reviewed briefly. However, discussion of specific performance specifications and information regarding the details of manufacture and testing of such equipment is beyond the scope of this document.

There has been a recent upsurge in interest from the media concerning the quality of the environment within aircraft cabins and cockpits especially in the commercial world 1-4 . This has included (although by no means been limited to) the air quality, with particular reference to the alleged effects ofcontamination from the aircraft turbine lubricant. Possible exposure to organophosphates (OPs) from the oil has raised special concerns from cabin crew. Such is the concern that government organisations around the world, including Australia, USA and UK, have set up committees to investigate the cabin air quality issue. Concern was also voiced in the aviation lubricants world at the way in which OP additives in turbine lubricants were being blamed in some reports for the symptoms being experienced by air crew and passengers. SAE Committee E-34 therefore decided that it should gather as much available information on the subject as possible. This would then enable E-34 to participate in debates on the issue and help prevent a potentially erroneous decision regarding the future of OP based additives in turbine lubricants. It would also serve as an indicator of where any additional work may be necessary to properly gauge the role that turbine lubricants, and OP additives, play in cabin air quality. This report summarises recent documentation from the literature on this subject. The contents do not necessarily represent the views of the SAE or any of the members of the study group who produced this review.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides design, operation, construction, test and installation recommendations for equipment that automatically presents supplemental oxygen masks to cabin occupants in the event of loss of cabin pressure. It specifically covers automatic presentation for transport category aircraft that operate above 30,000 ft (9,144 m) altitude, although it also provides guidance for similar equipment used in non-transport category aircraft, or aircraft operated below 30,000 ft (9,144 m) altitude.

This document outlines the engineering evaluation appropriate for modifying or replacing components of a previously certified seat when the certification process is based on qualification to the requirements of AS8049, which includes dynamic testing. The engineering evaluation presented in this document may be used to determine if a modification (including replacement of a component) is a minor change with respect to meeting the dynamic testing requirements described in AS8049. Whenever a modification is considered, the ability to meet all requirements of the applicable Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) must be verified. For example, this would include the capability to meet requirements such as flammability and flotation. Analysis and/or test data supporting the ability of the new materials and/or configuration to meet the applicable requirements must be submitted with the change documentation. This document addresses the evaluation of seat pan cushions, secondary components, and ancillary components. Other primary components such as restraint systems and primary structural components are not considered.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) establishes the minimum contents of and suggested supplements for survival kits for transport category airplanes flying over water areas during airline service. The purpose of this document is to establish criteria for the minimum survival equipment ot be carried with life rafts or slide/rafts on transport category airplanes. The minimum equipment is appropriate only when an approved radio frequency (RF) signaling device is available for deployment with the raft(s) or slid/raft(s).

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides recommended practices for cleaning aircraft oxygen equipment such as tubing, pieces parts (including regulator and valve parts), cylinders and ground-based equipment that may be used to support aircraft oxygen systems. These methods may apply to gaseous and liquid oxygen equipment. This document specifies work area details, methods to select suitable cleaning chemicals, cleaning methods, test methods to verify cleanliness level, and methods of packaging the components and parts after cleaning. Person designated to clean oxygen equipment should be qualified and trained to clean oxygen equipment. Cleanliness levels achieved are strongly dependent on the capabilities of the persons performing the cleaning operation.
