This International Standard specifies requirements for two grades of toluene suitable for industrial purposes. Grade 1 (synthesis grade) is a high quality grade normally required for use only as a chemical feedstock. Grade 2 (ordinary grade) relates to commercially pure toluene and is suitable for most normal commercial uses. This International Standard is applicable to material which consists essentially of toluene (C6H5.CH3).

1.1 This test method covers the determination of total nonaromatic hydrocarbons and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene and mixed xylenes by gas chromatography. The purity of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene and mixed xylenes is also calculated. Similar test methods, using the internal standard calibration technique and the external standard calibration technique, are Test Methods D2360, D3797, D4492, D5060, D5135, D5917, and D6563 respectively. 1.2 The limit of detection (LOD) is 0.0002 wt % and limit of quantitation (LOQ) is 0.0006 wt % for impurities in toluene, mixed xylenes, p-xylene, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, benzene, and styrene. 1.3 In determining the conformance of the test results using this method to applicable specifications, results shall be rounded off in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the sulphur content of aromatic hydrocarbons boiling below 200 °C. The method is directly applicable to sulphur contents of 0,1 to 30 mg/kg; higher contents may be determined by suitable dilution of the sample. Alkylsulphones, arylsulphonic acids and arylsulphonates all give incomplete recovery of sulphur.

1.1 This test method covers the determination of normally occurring trace impurities in, and the purity of, finished benzene by gas chromatography with external calibration. A similar test method, using the internal standard technique of calibration is Test Method D4492. 1.2 This test method is applicable for nonaromatic hydrocarbon impurities at levels from 5 to 2000 mg/kg and for benzene purities of 99.80 weight % or higher. 1.3 This test method is applicable for aromatic impurities from 5 to 2000 mg/kg in benzene. 1.4 This test method has been found applicable to heteroatomic species such as 1,4-dioxane, from 10 to 2000 mg/kg in benzene. 1.5 The limit of detection for aromatic impurities is 0.9 mg/kg, 2.7 mg/kg for 1,4-dioxane and 1.1 mg/kg for methyl cyclohexane. 1.6 In determining the conformance of the test results using this method to applicable specifications, results shall be rounded off in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29. 1.7 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.1 This standard is for use in calculating the weight and volume of benzene, toluene, mixed xylenes, styrene, orthoxylene, meta-xylene, para-xylene, cumene, ethylbenzene, 300 to 350°F and 350 to 400°F aromatic hydrocarbons, and cyclohexane. A method is given for calculating the volume at 60°F from an observed volume at t°F. Table 1 lists the density in Vacuo at 60°F for chemicals used to develop the relationship. Densities (or weights) “in vacuo” represent the true density (or weight) if measured in a vacuum without the buoyancy effect of air acting on the liquid. It is representative of the actual amount of product present. Densities (or weights) “in air” represent what would actually be measured on a scale. The difference is on the order of 0.13 %. Modern densitometers measure density in vacuo and the ASTM recommends the use of in vacuo densities (or weights). 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard.
