1.1 This test method covers a potentiometric titration procedure for determining active matter in disinfectant quaternary ammonium salts. This test method is intended for the analysis of quaternary ammonium salts used as disinfectants, and only applies to the following commonly used quaternary ammonium salts: n-alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (see Fig. 1), cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, and a blend of n-octyldecyl dimethylammonium chloride, di-n-octyl dimethylammonium chloride, and di-n-decyldimethyl ammonium chloride (see Fig. 2). Also, this test method can be applied to the analysis of disinfectant type products where the formula ingredients are known and the quaternary ammonium salt is one of the above. Interferences such as amines oxides and betaines present in disinfectant formulations were not tested. 1.2 This disinfectant quaternary ammonium salt conforms to the structures in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific precautionary information, see Section 8.

This European Standard specifies a test method and the minimum requirements for fungicidal or yeasticidal activity of chemical disinfectant and antiseptic products that form a homogeneous, physically stable preparation when diluted with hard water or - in the case of ready-to-use-products with water. Products can only be tested at a concentration of 80 % or less, as some dilution is always produced by adding the test organisms and interfering substance. This European Standard applies to products that are used in the veterinary area - i.e. in the breeding, husbandry, production, transport and disposal of all animals except when in the food chain following death and entry to the processing industry. EN 14885 specifies in detail the relationship of the various tests to one another and to "use recommendations". NOTE 1 The method described is intended to determine the activity of commercial formulations or active substances under the conditions in which they are used. NOTE 2 This method corresponds to a phase 2 step 1 test.

5.1 The procedure in this test method is used to evaluate the activity of a test reagent (antimicrobial agent/active ingredient) or formulation in the reduction or complete kill of the bacterial population in fabric and wash water following a single wash. The water to fabric ratio in common top loading machines is dynamic and varies by region. The proper water to fabric ratio and temperature for the worse-case scenario should be determined prior to testing. This test method may need to modified if the worse-case scenario is determined to be in top loading high efficiancy washing machine 1.1 This test method is designed to evaluate sanitizing/disinfectant laundry detergents/additives for use in traditional top-loading automatic clothes washing operations. This test method is designed predominantly to provide testing with representative vegetative bacteria but can also be designed to accommodate the testing of fungi and viruses. Note 1: This test method does not evaluate sanitizing/disinfectant laundry detergent/additives for use in front-loading or top-loading, low water high efficiency automatic clothes washing operations. 1.2 This test method is intended to compliment Test Method E2406 and is to be used in the cases where this test method is determined to be the worse case scenario for product usage. 1.3 Knowledge of microbiological techniques is required for these procedures. 1.4 It is the responsibility of the investigator to determine whether Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) are required and to follow them where appropriate (see section 40 CFR, 160 or as revised.) 1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. Note 2: In this test method, metric units are used for all applications, except for distance in which case inches are used. 1.6 Appropriate modifications to the test method may be required when the testing organisms are not specified herein. 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

5.1 The procedure in this test method is used to evaluate the effectiveness of a test reagent (antimicrobial agent/active ingredient) or formulation to reduce or completely kill bacterial populations on contaminated fabrics and in wash water following a single wash under simulated low wash volume conditions. The water to fabric ratio in common front loading machines is dynamic and varies by region and machine used. The proper water to fabric ratio and temperature for the worse-case scenario for product use should be determined and documented prior to testing. 1.1 This test method is designed to evaluate sanitizing/disinfectant laundry detergents/additives for use in front loading high efficiency (HE) automatic clothes washing operations that typically utilize very low wash water volumes. This test method is designed to provide testing with representative vegetative bacteria but can also be designed to accommodate the testing of fungi and viruses. 1.2 This test method is intended to compliment Test Method E2274 and is to be used in the cases where this test method is determined to be the worse case scenario for product usage. Note 1: Test Method E2274 is the recommended method to evaluate sanitizing/disinfectant laundry detergent/additives for use in traditional high wash water volume automatic clothes washing operations. 1.3 Knowledge of microbiological techniques is required for these procedures. 1.4 It is the responsibility of the investigator to determine whether Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) are required and to follow them where appropriate (see section 40 CFR, 160 or as revised. 1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. This European Standard specifies the European Standards to which products have to conform in order to support the claims for microbicidal activity which are referred to in this European Standard. This European Standard also specifies terms and definitions which are used in European Standards. It is applicable to products for which activity is claimed against the following microorganisms: vegetative bacteria (including mycobacteria and Legionella), bacterial spores, yeasts, fungal spores and viruses (including bacteriophages). It is intended to: a) enable manufacturers of products to select the appropriate standards to be used in order to provide data which support their claims for a specific product; b) enable users of the product to assess the information provided by the manufacturer in relation to the use for which they intend to use the product; c) assist regulatory authorities in assessing claims made by the manufacturer or by the person responsible for placing the product on the market. It is applicable to products to be used in the area of human medicine, the veterinary area and in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas. In the area of human medicine, it is applicable to chemical disinfectants and antiseptics to be used in areas and situations where disinfection or antisepsis is medically indicated. Such indications occur in patient care, in hospitals, in community medical facilities and dental institutions; - in clinics of schools, of kindergartens and of nursing homes; - and may also occur in the workplace and in the home. It may also include services such as in laundries and kitchens supplying products directly for the patient. In the veterinary area it is applicable to chemical disinfectants and antiseptics to be used in the areas of breeding, husbandry, production, transport and disposal of animals. It is not applicable to chemical disinfectants used in the food chain following death and entry to the processing industry. In food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas it is applicable to chemical disinfectants and antiseptics to be used in processing, distribution and retailing of food of animal or vegetable origin. It is also applicable to products for all public areas where disinfection is not medically indicated (homes, catering, schools, nurseries, transports, hotels, offices etc.) and products used in packaging, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, cosmetic etc. industries. This European Standard is also applicable to active substances and products under development for which no area of application has yet been specified. This European Standard does not refer to methods for testing the toxicological and ecotoxicological properties of products or active substances.
