1.1 This specification covers the quality requirements of flat laminated glass consisting of two or more lites of glass bonded with an interlayer material for use in building and related applications. 1.2 Depending on the number, thickness, and treatment of lites, and the number and thickness of interlayers, the glass shall be laminated for applications including, but not limited to, safety, security, detention, hurricane/cyclic-wind resistance, blast resistance, bullet resistance, sound reduction, and decorative glazing. 1.3 Optical distortion and the evaluation thereof are not currently within the scope of the standard. Mockups are recommended as a method to evaluate glass. (See Appendix X1.) 1.4 The dimensional values, except thickness designations, stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.1 This specification covers preassembled permanently sealed insulating glass units with one or two cavities and preassembled insulating glass (IG) units with capillary tubes intentionally left open or closed. 1.2 This specification is applicable only to insulating glass units that are constructed with glass or suspended film. 1.3 This specification is applicable to both double-glazed and triple-glazed insulating glass units; for triple-glazed insulating glass units where both of the outer lites are glass and middle lite is either glass or a suspended film. 1.4 The qualification of test specimens is based on frost/dew point and on the absence of fog after the specified test durations. 1.5 The qualification of argon gas-filled test specimens is based on maintaining the specified argon gas amounts before and after testing to Test Method E2188. 1.6 Qualification under this specification is intended to provide a basis for evaluating the durability of insulating glass units. 1.7 This specification is not applicable to insulating glass units containing a spandrel glass coating due to test method limitations. 1.8 This specification does not cover other physical requirements such as appearance, thermophysical properties, heat and light transmission, and glass displacement. NOTE 1—Insulating glass units qualified according to this specification are not necessarily suitable for structurally glazed applications. Factors such as sealant longevity when exposed to long term ultraviolet light and the structural properties of the sealant must be reviewed for these applications. For more information on the requirements for structural sealant glazing applications, refer to Specification C1369, Guide C1249, and Test Method C1265. 1.9 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. This document (all parts) covers the requirements for insulating glass units. The main intended uses of the insulating glass units are installations in windows, doors, curtain walling, bonded glazing for doors, windows and curtain walling, roofs and partitions. The achievement of the requirements of this standard indicates that insulating glass units fulfil the needs for intended use and ensures by means of the evaluation of conformity to this standard that, visual, energetic, acoustic, safety parameters do not change significantly over time. In cases where there is no protection against direct ultraviolet radiation or permanent shear load on the edge seal, as in bonded glazing for doors, windows and curtain walling systems, it is essential to follow additional European Technical Specifications (see EN 15434, EN 13022 1 and prEN 16759). Insulating glass units that are intended for artistic purposes (e. g. lead glass or fused glass) are excluded from the scope of this standard. Vacuum insulating glass is not covered by this standard (see ISO DIS 19916 1). Glass/plastics composites are under the scope as long as the surface of contact with sealants is a glass component. NOTE For glass products with electrical wiring or connections for, e. g. alarm or heating purposes, other directives, e. g. Low Voltage Directive, may apply. This European Standard gives definitions for insulating glass units and covers the rules for the system description, the optical and visual quality and the dimensional tolerances thereof and describes the substitution rules based on an existing system description.
