1.1 Scope. This standard identifies the levels of competence required of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel who respond to incidents involving hazardous materials or weapons of mass destruction (WMD). It specifically covers the requirements for basic life support and advanced life support personnel in the pre-hospital setting. 1.1.1 This standard is based on the premise that all EMS responders are trained to meet at least the core competencies of the operations level responders as defined in Chapter 5 of NFPA 472, Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents.

Exposure to inorganic acids in workplace air can cause irritations of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and exposure limits for hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid and nitric acid in air have been established to reduce exposure risks to potentially affected workers (1). Sampling and analytical methods for volatile inorganic acids are needed for exposure assessment and risk reduction purposes.1.1 This test method is intended for use in the determination of the time-weighted average mass concentration of hydrogen chloride gas and hydrochloric acid mist, hydrogen bromide vapor and hydrobromic acid mist, and nitric acid vapor and mist in workplace air. The samples are collected on an alkali-impregnated quartz fiber filter and analyzed by ion chromatography. The method is also appropriate for measuring short term exposures. 1.2 This test method assumes that air samples are collected using appropriate and applicable ASTM International standards for sampling of workplace air. 1.3 The procedure is targeted for occupational and environmental hygiene monitoring purposes. 1.4 No detailed operating instructions are provided because of differences among various makes and models of suitable instruments. Instead, the analyst shall follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the particular instrument. This standard does not address comparative accuracy of different devices or the precision between instruments of the same make and model. 1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.6 The practice contains notes, which are explanatory and not part of mandatory requirements of the standard. 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Most oxides of nitrogen are formed during high-temperature combustion. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set primary and secondary air quality standards for NO2 that are designed to protect the public health and the public welfare (40 CFR, Part 50). Oxides of nitrogen are generated by many industrial processes that can result in employee exposures. These are regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) which has promulgated exposure limits for the industrial working environment (29 CFR, Part 1910). These methods have been found satisfactory for measuring oxides of nitrogen in the ambient and workplace atmosphere over the ranges shown in 1.1.1.1 These test methods cover procedures for the continuous determination of total nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitric oxide (NO) as NOx, or nitric oxide (NO) alone or nitrogen dioxide (NO2) alone, in the ranges shown in the following table: Range of Concentration GasAmbient AtmosphereWorkplace Atmosphere μg/m3 (ppm) (Note 1)mg/m3 (ppm) (Note 1) NO10 to 600 (0.01 to 0.5)0.6 to 30 (0.5 to 25) (NO + NO2) = NOx20 to 1000 (0.01 to 0.05)1 to 50 (0.5 to 25) NO220 to 1000 (0.01 to 0.5)1 to 50 (0.5 to 25) Note 18212;Approximate range: 25°C and 101.3 kPa (1 atm). 1.2 The test methods are based on the chemiluminescent reaction between nitric oxide and ozone. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific precautionary statements, see Section 9.

This International Standard provides guidelines for the determination of number concentration and the size distribution of ultrafine aerosols and nanoaerosols by use of mobility particle sizers (also called differential mobility analysers). Only the particle fraction of the aerosol is considered. For ultrafine aerosols and nanoaerosols, exposure metrics such as the number and surface area concentration are important. This International Standard also gives guidelines for the determination of workplace exposure to ultrafine aerosols and nanoaerosols.

This Technical Specification describes the measurement of moulds in ambient air in order to identify, quantify and characterize bioaerosol pollution in ambient air resulting from emissions from different sources. The method described specifies the sampling of moulds as part of the suspended particulate matter (SPM, here particles with aerodynamic diameter up to ca. 30 μm) using a filter sampling system with gelatine/polycarbonate filter combination followed by the culture-based analyses on DG18 agar. The sampling duration can be varied between 10 min to 24 h. The health effect of bioaerosols is not limited to any particle fraction, therefore, this document describes the sampling of moulds as part of the suspended particulate matter as a convention method. NOTE The sampling method described in this document in principle is likely to be appropriate for the sampling of actinomycetes and other spore-forming bacteria (resistant to desiccation). For these species a special analytical procedure using different culture media should be applied, but this is not within the scope of this document. The standard method set out in this Technical Specification is accepted by convention as reference method. The measured quantity, here the number of colony forming units per cubic meter (CFU/m), is determined by the inlet design of the sampling head, the associated operational parameters and the analytical procedure. Standardized methods for sampling, detection and enumeration of moulds including standards for sampling strategies are important for comparative assessment of moulds in ambient air. Before doing any measurements a plan for the measurement strategy is necessary (see CEN/TS 16115-2 [5]). WARNING — The use of this Technical Specification may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This Technical Specification does not purport to address all the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
