This part of ISO 7240 specifies the requirements, test methods and performance criteria for point heat detectors for use in fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings (see ISO 7240-1). For other types of heat detector, or for detectors intended for use in other environments, this part of ISO 7240 can be used only for guidance. Heat detectors with special characteristics and developed for specific risks are not covered by this part of ISO 7240.

This Technical Report provides additional information on the requirements of the European Standard EN 54-2: 1997, in order to avoid misinterpretations of the clauses and to improve the understanding of the requirements of the standard. The interpretations are produced in the form of a table where in the first column the clauses of EN 54-2:1997 are listed for which an interpretation is considered necessary. In the second column the subject and in the third column the interpretation is given. This Technical Report does not include additional requirements and should only be used in connection with EN 54- 2: 1997. This Technical report is not a stand-alone document.

This European Standard specifies requirements, test methods and performance criteria for line smoke detectors utilising the attenuation and/or changes in attenuation of an optical beam, for use in fire detection systems installed in buildings. This European Standard does not cover: —Line smoke detectors designed to operate with separations between opposed components of less than 1 m; —Line smoke detectors whose optical path length is defined or adjusted by an integral mechanical connection; Line smoke detectors with special characteristics, which cannot be assessed by the test methods in this European Standard. NOTE The term "optical" is used to describe that part of the electromagnetic spectrum produced by the transmitter to which the receiver is responsive; this is not restricted to visible wavelengths.

This part of BS 5446 specifies requirements and type test methods for heat alarms. It is applicable to heat alarms intended solely for permanent installation on ceilings or walls of dwellings, and to heat alarms suitable for use in leisure accommodation vehicles (LAVs). NOTE 1 Equipment conforming to this part of BS 5446 might not be suitable for use in boats due to the corrosive atmosphere. NOTE 2 Although not covered by this part of BS 5446, equipment is available for use with heat alarms in order to provide a suitable warning system for use by the deaf and hearing impaired. NOTE 3 This part of BS 5446 does not include point type detectors.

This code of practice provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of emergency voice communication systems in and around buildings and at sports, entertainment and similar venues. It does not recommend whether or not an emergency voice communication system should be installed in a given premises. Henceforward in this code of practice, emergency voice communication systems are usually referred to as EVC systems and the term EVC is used to mean emergency voice communication. This code of practice primarily relates to the use of EVC in assisting both firefighters and those responsible for evacuating buildings or sports stadia in fire emergency situations, including evacuation of disabled persons. Use, other than in fire emergency situations, by disabled persons and others, although not precluded, is not addressed in detail. Other than in exceptional circumstances, EVC systems are not intended as the means of raising a fire alarm, in lieu of manual call points. Reference should be made to BS 5839-1 for guidance on fire detection and alarm systems. In the context of this code of practice, an EVC system contains no portable parts. Mobile telephones and two-way radio sets are therefore not within its scope. An EVC system should be: 1) restricted to a building, building complex or sports or similar venue; 2) continuously monitored for faults; 3) for use as described in this part of BS 5839. The term emergency voice communication systems is therefore not intended to cover general-purpose intercom systems, lift intercom systems, local (internal) telephone systems for general use, or any external communication systems, such as the public switched telephone network. Voice alarm systems are primarily intended for the automatic broadcasting of evacuation messages; they are covered by BS 5839-8 and are therefore excluded from this code of practice. This part of BS 5839 does not cover systems combining electrically the functions of EVC systems with functions of other fire-related or non-fire-related systems. That is, for example, an EVC master station may mechanically share part of its enclosure with the control and indicating equipment of a fire alarm system, but recommendations for sharing a single mains-derived extra low voltage power supply are not within the scope of this standard. Recommendations for integrated systems are given in BS 7807. This part of BS 5839 applies only to emergency voice communication systems for use in a temperate climate such as that of the United Kingdom.

This part of BS 5839 provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in and around buildings, other than dwellings. It does not recommend whether or not a fire alarm system should be installed in any given premises. Recommendations for fire detection and alarm systems in dwellings are given in BS 5839-6. The term fire detection and alarm systems, in the context of this part of BS 5839, includes systems that range from those comprising only one or two manual call points and sounders to complex networked systems that incorporate a large number of automatic fire detectors, manual call points and sounders, connected to numerous inter-communicating control and indicating panels. The term also includes systems that are capable of providing signals to initiate the operation of other fire protection systems and equipment (such as fire extinguishing systems, smoke control systems or automatic door release equipment) or safety measures (such as shut down of air handling systems, closing of oil or gas valves, or grounding of lifts). It does not apply to the other systems and equipment themselves, or the ancillary circuits to interface with them. Recommendations for the planning, installation and servicing of facilities for operation of certain fire protection systems by the systems addressed within this part of BS 5839 are given in BS 7273. This part of BS 5839 does not cover systems whose primary function is to extinguish or control fire, such as sprinkler or automatic extinguishing systems, even though they might have a secondary alarm function; it does, however, cover the use of a signal from an automatic extinguishing system as one initiating element of a fire alarm system (e.g. by use of a pressure or flow switch). This part of BS 5839 does not cover voice alarm systems. Recommendations for voice alarm systems are given in BS 5839-8. This part of BS 5839 does not cover systems combining fire alarm functions with other non-fire related functions. Recommendations for such integrated systems are given in #DD CLC/TS 50398.$ This part of BS 5839 does not cover the 999 (or 112) public emergency call system, or manually or mechanically operated sounders. This part of BS 5839 does not cover audible or visual way-guidance systems which are designed to complement fire alarm systems. Recommendations for fire detection and alarm systems in electronic data processing installations and similar critical electronic equipment rooms are given in BS 6266, which provides recommendations over and above those given in this part of BS 5839. Recommendations for fire detection and alarm systems in hospitals are given in the #NHS Estates publications HTM 05-03 Part B82 (in England and Wales) or SHTM 82 (in Scotland).$ This part of BS 5839 applies to extensions and alterations to existing systems, at least in respect of the design, installation, commissioning and certification of the new work, albeit that the extended or altered system might not, overall, comply with the recommendations of this standard.
