1.1 The purpose of this document is to assist potential users in understanding the issues related to the accuracy of non-contacting strain measurement systems and to provide a common framework for quantitative comparison of optical systems. The output from a non-contacting optical strain and deformation measurement system is generally divided into optical data and image analysis data. Optical data contains information related to specimen strains and the image analysis process converts the encoded optical information into strain data. The enclosed document describes potential sources of error in the strain data and describes general methods for quantifying the error and estimating the accuracy of the measurements when applying non-contacting methods to the study of events for which the optical integration time is much smaller than the inverse of the maximum temporal frequency in the encoded data (that is, events that can be regarded as static during the integration time). A brief application of the approach, along with specific examples defining the various terms, is given in the Appendix.

Sampling and sample preparation procedures for physical testing are specified in ISO 10836. The methods specified in this International Standard are applicable to both the loading and unloading of a lot by means of belt conveyors and other ore handling equipment to which a mechanical sampler may be installed or where manual sampling may safely be conducted. The methods are applicable to all iron ores, whether natural or processed (e.g. concentrates and agglomerates, such as pellets or sinters).

This International Standard specifies experimental methods for the evaluation of quality variation of iron ores for each type of iron ore being traded and for each handling plant. Two distinct approaches are specified. The first is to analyse interleaved samples composed of a number of paired increments taken and combined alternately following stratified sampling or systematic sampling as specified in ISO 3082. The second is to collect and analyse individual increments and then to analyse the data using variographic methods. Using interleaved samples involves less work, but use of variograms provides a better estimate of quality variation and hence a better estimate of the sampling variance. The variogram method is usually used to fine tune a sampling operation. NOTE The experimental methods may be applied approximately to time basis sampling when the flowrate is almost uniform.

This International Standard specifies experimental methods for checking the bias of the sampling of iron ores, when the sampling is carried out in accordance with the methods specified in ISO 3081 or ISO 3082, having as reference a stopped-belt sampling method according to ISO 3081. NOTES 1 Sampling systems not completely in accordance with ISO 3081 or ISO 3082 are not always expected to be biased. Therefore bias checking may be done when there is some disagreement about the importance of some departure from the conditions of ISO 3081 and ISO 3082. If one party argues that the bias is likely to be substantial under some particular set of conditions then bias testing should mostly be done when those conditions apply. 2 The method for analysis of experimental data described here may also be applied: a) for checking the bias of sample preparation of iron ores, having as reference the methods for sampling preparation according to ISO 3082 and ISO 3083; b) for checking a possibly significant difference in the results obtained from the samples of one lot collected at different places, for example, a loading point and unloading point.
