The BPI is designed to yield quantitative information concerning neutron beam and image system parameters that contribute to film exposure, and thereby, affect overall image quality. For proper measurements of film exposure due to the neutron beam constituents, the BPI must be fabricated in accordance with this practice. This practice shall be followed for the fabrication of all Beam Purity Indicators to be used with Method E 545 to determine image quality in direct thermal neutron radiography.1.1 This practice covers the material and fabrication of a Beam Purity Indicator (BPI), which can be used to determine the relative quality of radiographic images produced by direct, thermal neutron radiographic examination.1.2 The values stated in SI units are regarded to be standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This International Standard applies to prospecting and mining bore-hole apparatus for X-ray fluorescence analysis and logging intended for the measurement and recording of values characterizing the elemental composition of rocks in the immediate vicinity of bore-hole walls. This standard applies to apparatus consisting of: - bore-hole logging instrument with a X-ray source and detection unit; - coaxial cable; - depth recording unit; - other instruments (power supply units, converters, recorders, processing and read-out instruments) if they are integral components of the apparatus. It does not apply to the bore-hole logging apparatus used for prospecting radioactive ore deposits. This standard specifies the types of apparatus, general technical requirements, performance or production unit acceptance tests, and gives recommendations about technical characteristics that are to be included in the operation and maintenance documentation (or certificate).

This International Standard establishes methods for performance testing, calibration and usage of Nal (TI) detector systems for the measurement of gamma-ray energies and emission rates of radionuclides and the assay for radioactivity. This standard provides a standardized basis for the calibration and usage of sodium iodide detector systems for the measurement of gamma-ray emission rates of radionuclides. Typical applications include radionuclide identification and assay in various industrial, environmental, and medical applications. A thallium activated sodium iodide detector system consists of three major components: a scintillating medium that produces photons of light when ionizing radiation interacts with it; one or more photomultipliers or photodiodes, optically coupled to the scintillator, which converts the light photons to an amplified electrical pulse or pulses; and associated electronic instrumentation which powers the photomultiplier and processes the output signal. Both energy calibration and efficiency calibration are covered. The following three techniques are considered: a) total spectrum counting (see 4.1) which employs a system that counts all pulses above a low-energy threshold (see 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3); b) single-channel analyzer counting (see 4.2) which employs a system with a counting window which establishes upper and lower energy boundaries (see 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3); c) multichannel analyzer counting (see 4.3) which employs a system in which multiple counting windows are utilized. This technique allows measurements for which the continuum under the full-energy peak may be subtracted without introducing unacceptable error. In case of overlapping peaks in the spectrum, it is realized that a multichannel analyzer (MCA) with access to a spectrum-stripping program is necessary. This case is not covered by this standard.

This International Standard applies to centralized systems intended for continuous monitoring of radiation and/or levels of radioactivity in nuclear facilities, primarily in support of radiological protection in the working areas.
