Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Verfahren fest, das im Rahmen der Produktionskontrolle oder der Produktentwicklung zur Beurteilung der Wärmefreisetzungsrate von im Wesentlichen ebenen Produkten geeignet ist, die in horizontaler Ausrichtung kontrollierten Stufen einer Erhitzung durch Strahlung unter Anwendung einer externen Zündvorrichtung ausgesetzt werden. Bei dieser Prüfung wird die Wärmefreisetzungsrate mit Hilfe einer Thermosäule bestimmt und nicht über den Sauerstoffverbrauch, der bei genauer arbeitenden Verfahren ausgewertet wird. Bei dieser Prüfung wird auch die Zeit gemessen, bis eine Entzündung (andauerndes Brennen mit Flamme) erfolgt. Der Massenverlust des Probekörpers kann wahlweise bestimmt werden.
