The 25-mm (1-in.) deflection IFD method is recommended for production screening and quality control on full size cushions only. Applicable cushion thicknesses to be tested by this test method are only those listed in this test method. Further research and development are required before this test method will be applicable to other cushion thicknesses. This test method is designed to give a value approximating the 25 % IFD on a 100-mm (4-in.) thick piece of foam when the actual specimen thickness tested is within the ranges listed in the test method. In case of disagreement, the referee method is the IFD procedure in Test Methods D 3574, Test B1. The user of this test method shall establish the correlation between this test method and the referee method.1.1 This test method covers a screening type quality control test used to determine if flexible polyurethane foam cushions are within the specified grade range for firmness. 1.2 This test method is limited to foams with thicknesses that are 75 mm (3 in.) or greater. 1.3 This test method is based on the fact that the traditional industry standard thickness for Indentation Force Deflection (IFD) is 100 mm (4 in.), and the traditional percent deflection for IFD acceptance and product planning is 25 %. With respect then to these traditional industry conventions, a 25 % deflection on a 100-mm (4-in.) cushion would be 25 mm (1 in.). Thus, deflecting proper thickness cushions 25 mm (1 in.) will determine if the flexible polyurethane foam is within the specified grade range for 25 % IFD. 1.4 Cushion thicknesses less than 75 mm (3 in.) shall not be tested for IFD using this test method. 1.5 This test method is intended to provide a quick and simple method to screen flexible polyurethane foams for determination of its firmness grade. 1.6 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Note 18212;This test method and ISO 2439 address the same subject matter, but differ in technical content.

A constituent content of a composite material must be known in order to analytically model the material properties (mechanical, physical, thermal, or electrical) of the composite which are affected by the reinforcement or matrix. Also, knowledge of the constituent content is required for evaluation of the quality of a fabricated material and the processes used during fabrication. The void volume of a composite material may significantly affect some of its mechanical properties. Higher void volumes usually mean lower fatigue resistance, greater susceptibility to moisture penetration and weathering, and increased variation or scatter in strength properties. Knowledge of the void volume of a composite material is desirable as an indication of the quality of a composite. Reinforcement content may be used to normalize mechanical properties affected by amount of reinforcement in the coupon.1.1 These test methods determine the constituent content of composite materials by one of two approaches. Method I physically removes the matrix by digestion or ignition by one of seven procedures, leaving the reinforcement essentially unaffected and thus allowing calculation of reinforcement or matrix content (by weight or volume) as well as percent void volume. Method II, applicable only to laminate materials of known fiber areal weight, calculates reinforcement or matrix content (by weight or volume), and the cured ply thickness, based on the measured thickness of the laminate. Method II is not applicable to the measurement of void volume. 1.1.1 These test methods are primarily intended for two-part composite material systems. However, special provisions can be made to extend these test methods to filled material systems with more than two constituents, though not all test results can be determined in every case. 1.1.2 The procedures contained within have been designed to be particularly effective for certain classes of polymer or metal matrices. The suggested applications are discussed in Section 4, as well as at the start of each procedure. 1.1.3 Method I assumes that the reinforcement is essentially unaffected by the digestion or ignition medium. A procedure for correction of the results for minor changes in the reinforcement is included. Procedures A through F are based on chemical removal of the matrix while Procedure G removes the matrix by igniting the matrix in a furnace. 1.1.4 Method II assumes that the fiber areal weight of the reinforcement material form is known or controlled to an acceptable tolerance. The presence of voids is not measured. Eq 9 and 10 assume zero void content to perform the calculation. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This International Standard specifies a method for the deter- mination of loss in thickness and loss in hardness of flexible cellular materials intended for use in upholstery. This test method provides a means of assessing the service per- formance of flexible cellular materials of the latex and polyether urethane types used in load-bearing upholstery. The measured loss in thickness and loss in hardness are related to, but are not necessarily the same as, the losses likely to oc- cur in service. The method is applicable both to standard size test pieces cut from stock material and to shaped components.
