Specimen Requirements8212;Even though a pair of specimens have the same color values at three angles, if there are differences in gloss, orange peel, texture, or flake orientation, they may not be a visual match. Note 28212;Information presented in this practice is based upon data taken on metallic materials coatings. Applicability of this practice to other materials should be confirmed by the user.1.1 This practice covers the instrumental requirements, standardization procedures, material standards, and parameters needed to make precise instrumental measurements of the colors of gonioapparent materials. The document describes the procedure for determining the resistance to cracking and/or pick-off on rapid deformation of an organic coating on a metallic substrate in terms of energy which the specimen will withstand. The tickness of the coating to be tested shall be 60 micronmillimeters at maximum. The test procedure is not recommended for coatings of thickness greater than 60 micronmillimeters due to the lack of meaningful results.

The document describes the procedures for determining objectively the chalking resulting from natural or artificial weathering of an organic coating on a metallic substrate. The advantage of this procedure for measuring chalking of an organic coating is that the result can be read off immediately on an instrument. Subjective judgement by visual comparison of test specimens with reference specimens is not necessary. Experience to date with this test method has been based mainly on artificially weathered specimens. Reproductible results can only be obtained by careful execution of the test.
