This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the electrical resistivity of granular carbon (calcined or graphitized) used in the manufac-ture of carbon electrodes for the production of alu-minium. The measurement of electrical resistivity assists in assessing the extent of coke calcination. The electrical resistivity of the coke aggregate will influence that of the coke electrodes made from it. In general, a more highly calcined coke will have a lower electrical resistivity if other factors such as grain size are similar.
Methods of sampling and test for carbonaceous materials used in aluminium manufacture - Electrode coke - Determination of electrical resistivity of calcined coke granules
This International Standard specifies a method for the measurement of the bulk density of granular carbon and graphite materials used in the manufacture of carbon electrodes for the production of aluminium. Bulk density depends on the size, shape and porosity of the granules. For samples with similar grain size and shape, comparison of the real density with the bulk density (tapped) allows the porosity to be as-sessed. Coke porosity is an important quality par-ameter which can affect the quality and performance of the carbon electrodes.

The values determined in this test, when evaluated in terms of pertinent experience with other cokes, may be used as indications of the extent to which a given coke will break in conventional transit and handling beyond the point of sampling.1.1 This test method covers the application of two procedures for the determination of the property of coke of withstanding breakage when dropped under specified test conditions.1.2 Procedure A used when the coke sample contains 50 % or less of 100 mm (4 in.) after removal of coke smaller than 50 mm (2 in.). Procedure A appears in Sections .1.3 Procedure B used when the coke sample contains more than 50 % 100 mm (4 in.) after removal of coke smaller than 50 mm (2 in.). Procedure B appears in Sections .1.4 si-value;1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Standard Test Method for Drop Shatter Test for Coke
This test method determines the size distribution of coke for conformance to specifications of percentages retained on designated screen sizes.1.1 This test method describes the separation of a coke sample into defined size fractions and expressing said fractions as a weight percent of the gross sample. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. Inch-pound units shall be accepted on an equivalent basis. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Standard Test Method for Drop Shatter Test for Coke
Coke undergoes various degrees of degradation during removal from coke ovens, transportation, and its decent within a blast furnace to the combustion zone. These processes subject the coke to impact and abrasion. This test method is a relative measure of the resistance of coke to breakage when subjected to these degradation processes.1.1 This test method describes a procedure for obtaining a relative measure of the resistance to degradation of coke by impact and abrasion. 1.2 Standard Procedure8212;This procedure uses a coke sample sized to −75 mm [−3 in.] and + 50 mm [ + 2 in.]. 1.3 Alternative Procedure8212;This procedure using coke sized 50 % of 63 by 50 mm [2½ by 2 in.] and 50 % of 50 by 37.5 mm [2 by 1 ½ in.]. 1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
