This SAE Standard covers material, dimensional, and performance requirements of steel O-ring face seal fittings for tubing and the O-ring face seal interface and nut portion of hose stem assemblies for nominal tube or hose diameters 6.35 mm (0.250 in) through 38.1 mm (1.500 in). These fittings are intended for general application and hydraulic systems on industrial equipment and commercial products, where elastomeric seals are acceptable to overcome leakage and variations in assembly procedures. These fittings are capable of providing leak proof full flow connections in hydraulic systems operating from 95 kPa (28 in Hg) vacuum to working pressures shown in Table 1. Since many factors influence the pressure at which a hydraulic system will or will not perform satisfactorily, these values should not be construed as guaranteed minimums. For any application, it is recommended that sufficient testing be conducted and reviewed by both the user and manufacturer to assure that required performance levels will be safe.

This European Standard specifies requirements for elastomeric materials used in seals for supply pipes and fittings, ancillaries and valves at operating temperatures in general from - 5 ℃ up to 50 ℃ and in special cases from -15 ℃ up to 50 ℃, for the following: General applications (see Table 4, type G) a) gaseous fuel (manufactured, natural and liquefied petroleum gas [LPG] in gaseous phase); b) hydrocarbon fluids with aromatic content up to 30 % (V/V), including LPG in liquid phase. Special applications (see Table 4, type H) Materials suitable for carrying gaseous fuels containing gas condensates and hydrocarbon fluids of unrestricted aromatic content. General requirements for finished joint seals are also given; any additional requirements called for by the particular application are specified in the relevant product standards taking into account that the performance of pipe joints is a function of the seal material properties, seal geometry and pipe joint design. This European Standard should be used where appropriate with product standards which specify performance requirements for joints. This European Standard is applicable to joint seals for all pipeline materials including iron, steel, copper and plastics. In the case of composite seals requirements in 4.2.8 and 4.2.9 apply only when the materials used for any elastomeric parts come into contact with gaseous fuel or hydrocarbon fluid. Elongation at break, tensile strength, compression set and stress relaxation requirements for materials of hardness categories 80 and 90 apply only when they constitute that part of the seal which participates directly in the sealing function or in long term stability. This standard is not applicable to the following: a) seals made from cellular materials; b) seals with enclosed voids as part of their design; c) seals with requirements of resistance to flame or to thermal stress; d) seals which contain splices joining pre-vulcanized profile ends.

1.1 This practice describes field tests to determine the adhesive and cohesive characteristics of an installed sealant joint, by manually placing a strain on the sealant. The sealant to be tested shall be fully cured. The results of this method can be used in conjunction with other information to determine the overall performance of the sealant joint. The user of this practice should define the other parameters to be evaluated such as cleaning of the substrate, depth control of the sealant, sealant profile, etc. This method describes both nondestructive and destructive procedures.1.2 The destructive procedure stresses the sealant in such a way as to cause either cohesive or adhesive failure of the sealant or cohesive failure of the substrate where deficient substrate conditions exist. The objective is to characterize the adhesive/cohesive performance of the sealant on the specific substrate by applying whatever strain is necessary to effect failure of the sealant bead. It is possible that the strain applied to the sealant bead may result in the failure of a deficient substrate before effecting a failure in the sealant.Note 18212;The destructive procedure requires immediate repair of the sealant bead. Appropriate materials and equipment should be available for this purpose.Note 28212;Sealant formulations may fail in cohesion or adhesion when properly installed, and tested by this method. The sealant manufacturer should be consulted to determine the appropriate guidelines for using this method.1.3 The nondestructive procedure places strain on the sealant and a stress on the adhesive bond. Though termed nondestructive, this procedure may result in an adhesive failure of the deficient sealant bead, but should not cause a cohesive failure in the sealant. The results of this procedure should be either adhesive failure or no failure.Note 38212;The nondestructive procedure may require immediate repair of the sealant bead, if failure is experienced. Appropriate materials and equipment should be available for this purpose.1.4 The committee with jurisdiction over this practice is not aware of any comparable practices published by other organizations or committees.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
