This publication addresses BAHXs used for boiling product oxygen at elevated pressures. The oxy.qen enters the BAHX as a subcooled liquid and leaves as a superheated vapor. Other BAHX uses in oxygen applications are not addressed, although incidents involving aluminum in oxygen service are discussed. This publication contains a summary of current knowledge and industrial practices used in the safe application of BAHXs for the boiling of oxygen at elevated pressures. This publication is not intended to be a mandatory standard code. It is based upon the combined experimental work, operating experience, and design practices of major producers and operators of air separation plants.

An assessment complying with this standard need not address each individual system component or subsystem within an industrial facility with equal weight; however, it must be sufficiently comprehensive to identify the major efficiency improvement opportunities for improving the overall energy performance of the system. This standard is designed to be applied primarily at industrial facilities, but many of the concepts can be used in other facilities such as those in the institutional, commercial, and water and wastewater facilities.

This standard prescribes the methods for testing the performance of air-to-air heat/energy exchangers. In this standard, an air-to-air heat/energy exchanger is a device to transfer heat and/or water vapor from one airstream to another. The types of air-to-air heat/energy exchangers covered by this standard are: a. regenerative energy exchangers (including heat wheels and total energy wheels), b. heat pipe exchangers, c. thermosiphon exchangers, d. recovery loop exchangers (also called run-around exchangers), and e. fixed-plate exchangers. The scope of this standard also includes both laboratory and field tests, provided that appropriate levels of uncertainty can be achieved when testing. A test is deemed to be within the scope of this standard if both a pre-test uncertainty analysis and a post-test uncertainty analysis yield satisfactory uncertainty limits.
