This European Standard provides the basic requirements of sensors and networks collecting accurate data of the relevant parameters informing in real-time about lightning tracking and range. It describes the application of the data collected by these sensors and networks in the form of warnings and historical data. This European Standard applies to the use of information from thunderstorm warning systems (which are systems or equipment which provide real-time information) on atmospheric electrical activity in order to monitor for preventive means. The scope of this document is providing: – a general description of the available lightning and storm electrification hazard warning systems; – a classification of thunderstorm detection devices and properties; – guidelines for alarming methods; – a procedure to determine the thunderstorm information necessity; – some examples of possible preventive actions (only for information). A non-exhaustive list of activities to which this European Standard might apply is given below: – people in open areas: maintenance people, labour, sports or other open-air activities, competitions, crowded events, agricultural activities, farms and fisheries; – wind farms, larger solar power systems, power lines, etc.; – occupational health and safety prevention; – safeguard sensitive equipment: computer systems, electric or electronic systems, emergency systems, alarms and safety; – prevention of losses in operations and industrial processes; – prevention of serious accidents involving dangerous substances (e.g. flammable, radioactive, toxic, and explosive); – prevention in determined environments or activities with special danger of electrostatic discharges (e.g. space and flight vehicle operations); – operations in which the continuity of the basic services is needed to be guaranteed (e.g. telecommunications, the generation, transport and distribution of energy, sanitary services and emergency services); – infrastructures: ports, airports, railroads, motorways and cableways; – civil defence of the environment: forest fires, land slide and floods; – managing traffic (e.g. airplanes) or wide networks (e.g. power lines, telecommunication lines) may also benefits from having early detection of thunderstorms. The following aspects are outside of this European Standard: a) lightning protection which is covered in their corresponding European and National standards and regulations; b) other thunderstorm related phenomena such as rain, hail, wind, etc.; c) satellite and radar thunderstorm detection techniques; d) this European Standard does not address any details on lightning and/or storm electrification hazard preventive actions.

This part of EN 62305 provides the requirements for protection of a structure against physica l damage by means of a lightning protection system (LPS), and for protection against injury to living beings due to touch and step voltages in the vicinity of an LPS (see -1 ). This standard is applicable to: a) design, installation, inspection and maintenance of an LPS for structures without limitation of their height, b) establishment of measures for protection against injury to living beings due to touch and step voltages.

This part of IEC 60099 covers metal-oxide surge arresters with external series gap (externally gapped line arresters (EGLA) that are applied on overhead transmission and distribution lines, only to protect insulator assemblies from lightning-caused flashovers. This standard defines surge arresters to protect the insulator assembly from lightning-caused overvoltages only. Therefore, and since the metal-oxide resistors are not permanently connected to the line, the following items are not considered for this standard: • switching impulse sparkover voltage; • residual voltage at steep current and switching current impulse; • thermal stability; • long-duration current impulse withstand duty; • power-frequency voltage versus time characteristics of an arrester; • disconnector test; • aging duties by power-frequency voltage. Considering the particular design concept and the special application on overhead transmission and distribution lines, some unique requirements and tests are introduced, such as the verification test for coordination between insulator withstand and EGLA protective level, the follow current interrupting test, mechanical load tests, etc. Designs with the EGLA's external series gap installed in parallel to an insulator are not covered by this standard.

This part of IEC 62305 provides general principles to be followed for protection of structures against lightning, including their installations and contents, as well as persons. The following cases are outside the scope of this standard: – railway systems; – vehicles, ships, aircraft, offshore installations; – underground high pressure pipelines; - pipe, power and telecommunication lines placed outside the structure. NOTE These systems usually fall under special regulations produced by various specialized authorities.

This part of IEC 62305 provides information for the design, installation, inspection, maintenance and testing of electrical and electronic system protection (SPM) to reduce the risk of permanent failures due to lightning electromagnetic impulse (LEMP) within a structure. This standard does not cover protection against electromagnetic interference due to lightning, which may cause malfunctioning of internal systems. However, the information reported in Annex A can also be used to evaluate such disturbances. Protection measures against electromagnetic interference are covered in IEC 60364-4-44 and in the IEC 61000 series. This standard provides guidelines for cooperation between the designer of the electrical and electronic system, and the designer of the protection measures, in an attempt to achieve optimum protection effectiveness. This standard does not deal with detailed design of the electrical and electronic systems themselves.

This Part 6 of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for devices intended to count the number of lightning strike pulses flowing in a conductor. This conductor may be part of a lightning protection system (LPS) or connected to an SPD installation (or other conductors which are not intended to conduct a significant portion of lightning currents). NOTE Lightning strike counters may also be suitable for use in hazardous atmospheres. Regard should then be taken of the extra requirements necessary for the components to be installed in such conditions.

This Part 5 of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for ?C earth electrode inspection housings (earth pit)@ ?C earth electrode seals. Lightning protection system components (LPSC) may also be suitable for use in hazardous atmospheres. Regard should then be taken of the extra requirements necessary for the components to be installed in such conditions. NOTE Different requirements and test procedures are given in EN 124 and EN-1253-1.

This part of IEC 62305 is applicable to risk assessment for a structure due to lightning flashes to earth. Its purpose is to provide a procedure for the evaluation of such a risk. Once an upper tolerable limit for the risk has been selected, this procedure allows the selection of appropriate protection measures to be adopted to reduce the risk to or below the tolerable limit.
