This part of IEC 62395 provides detailed recommendations for the system design@ installation@ maintenance and repair of electrical resistance trace heating systems in industrial and commercial applications. This standard does not include or provide for any applications in potentially explosive atmospheres. This standard pertains to trace heating systems that may comprise either factory fabricated or field-assembled (work-site) units@ and which may be series or parallel trace heaters@ or surface heaters (heater pads or heater panels) that have been assembled and/or terminated in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The products covered by this standard are intended to be installed by persons who are suitably trained in the techniques required and that only trained personnel carry out especially critical work@ such as the installation of connections and terminations. Installations are intended to be carried out under the supervision of a qualified person who has undergone supplementary training in electric trace heating systems. This standard does not cover induction@ impedance or skin effect heating. Trace heating systems can be grouped into different types of installations. These are characterized by different requirements for testing and are usually certified for a specific type of installation or application. Typical applications for the different types of installation are as follows: a) Installations of trace heating on pipes@ vessels and associated equipment. Applications include: ?C freeze protection and temperature maintenance; ?C hot water lines; ?C oil and chemical lines; ?C sprinkler systems. b) Outdoor exposed area installations of trace heating. Applications include: ?C roof de-icing; ?C gutter and downspout de-icing; ?C catch basins and drains; ?C rail heating. c) Installation with embedded trace heating. Applications include: ?C snow melting; ?C floor warming; ?C frost heave prevention; ?C underground thermal energy storage systems; ?C door frames. d) Installations of trace heating internal to conduit or piping. Applications include: ?C snow melting ?C in conduit; ?C floor warming ?C in conduit; ?C frost heave prevention ?C in conduit; ?C underground thermal energy storage systems ?C in conduit; ?C internal trace heating of potable water lines; ?C enclosed drains and culverts.

This part of IEC 60519 provides particular safety requirements for electric arc furnace installations and its operating and maintenance personnel. These safety provisions concern the protection of persons and the environment against dangers of electrical origin and also against certain dangers of non-electrical origin. This standard is applicable to electroheating installations such as: a) Furnaces for direct arc heating@ forming arcs between the electrode and metal such as the electric arc furnace using alternating current (EAFac) or direct current (EAFdc)@ and ladle furnace (LF); b) Furnaces for arc-resistance heating forming arcs between the electrode and the charge material or heating the charge material by the Joule effect@ such as the submerged arc furnace using alternating current (SAFac)@ or direct current (SAFdc). NOTE For purposes of this document abbreviation EAF is used for all kinds of electric arc furnace installations.

This Technical Specification is applicable to industrial electroheating installations using electric energy as input, alone or in combination with other kinds of energy.However,external combustible fuel energy input is not dealt with, and all considerations begin at the electric only mains frequency source to which the installation is connected. Any external voltage transformation from the supply network to the plant into a special voltage which is fed into the installation is not dealt with in this Technical Specification, since it is not considered a responsibility of the manufacturer of the installation.

This part of IEC 60519 specifies safety requirements for industrial electroheating equipment and installations in which infrared radiation, usually generated by infrared emitters, is significantly dominating over heat convection or heat conduction as means of energy transfer to the material to be treated. A further limitation of the scope is that the infrared emitters have a maximum spectral emission at longer wavelengths than 780 nm in air or vacuum, and are emitting wideband continuous spectra such as by thermal radiation or high pressure arcs.

This standard does not include or provide for any requirements in potentially explosive atmospheres. This part of IEC 60519 does not cover induction@ impedance or skin effect heating. NOTE Specific requirements and test criteria for electrical resistance trace heating systems and design@ installation@ and maintenance requirements for these systems are detailed in IEC 62395-1 and IEC 62395-2. This standard provides general safety requirements for the installation@ operation@ maintenance and repair of systems and individual circuits and for trace heating systems designs. These safety considerations concern the protection of persons and the environment against dangers of electrical origin and also against certain dangers of non-electrical origin@ common to all types of equipment and installations.
