"This part of IEC 60118 in principle covers all relevant EMC phenomena for hearing aids. EMC phenomena@ such as RF emission and electrostatic discharge@ are not currently known to be a significant problem in connection with hearing aids and are therefore not dealt with. Based on new knowledge@ they could be considered in connection with future revisions or extensions of this standard. Hearing aid immunity to high frequency electromagnetic fields originating from digital wireless devices operating in the frequency ranges 0@8 GHz to 0@96 GHz and 1@4 GHz to 2@48 GHz is currently identified as the only relevant EMC phenomenon regarding hearing aids. Future editions of this part of IEC 60118 may add tests for other frequency bands@ as they come into more common use. IEC 61000-4-3 is the basis for relevant EMC tests to be conducted on hearing aids. Measurement methods and acceptance levels are described in this part of IEC 60118. For the purpose of this part of IEC 60118@ two immunity classes of hearing aids are defined (see 3.1) related to their use. ""Bystander compatible"" ensures that a hearing aid is usable in environments where digital wireless devices are in operation in the proximity of the hearing aid wearer. ""User compatible"" hearing aids ensures that a hearing aid is usable when the wearer is using a digital wireless device at the wearer's own aided ear. Measurement methods for hearing aids with non-acoustic outputs and for hearing aids connected to other equipment by cables are not given in this standard."

This European Standard applies to the services offered by hearing aid professionals in their efforts to provide benefit for their clients. This European Standard specifies the process of hearing aid provision from the first client contact to the long term follow-up. This European Standard also defines requirements for education, facilities, equipment and code of conduct. A quality management system with the overall objective of securing client satisfaction and covering the elements of the service is also an essential part of the requirements. This European Standard centres on the services offered to the majority of clients with hearing impairment. Certain groups of hearing impaired such as children, persons with other disabilities or persons with implantable devices may require services beyond what is covered in this European Standard.

This part of IEC 60318 describes an occluded-ear simulator intended for the measurement of insert earphones in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 10 000 Hz. It is suitable for air conduction hearing aids and earphones, coupled to the ear by means of ear inserts e.g. ear moulds or similar devices. The occluded-ear simulator is also suitable as the basis for an extension intended to simulate the complete ear canal and the outer ear (for instance in head simulators). The occluded-ear simulator simulates the acoustic transfer impedance for the occluded normal adult human ear. However, it does not simulate the leakage between an earmould and a human ear canal; therefore, the results obtained with the occluded-ear simulator may deviate from the performance of an insert earphone on a real ear, especially at low frequencies. Moreover, large performance variations among individual ears will occur which should be considered when using the ear simulator. Above 10 kHz the device does not simulate a human ear, but can be used as an acoustic coupler at additional frequencies up to 16 kHz. Below 100 Hz, the device has not been verified to simulate a human ear, but can be used as an acoustic coupler at additional frequencies down to 20 Hz.

This International Standard applies to sound signalling devices with integral enclosures or to sound signalling devices intended to be fitted into or supplied with enclosures according to IEC 60670 intended for household and similar purposes with rated voltages not exceeding 250 V a.c. or 250 V d.c. and with rated power inputs not exceeding 100 VA. This part of IEC 60645 applies to instruments designed primarily for the measurement of otoacoustic emissions in the human external acoustic meatus evoked by acoustic probe pulses or tones. This standard defines the characteristics to be specified by the manufacturer, lays down performance specifications for two types of instruments 1 and specifies the functions to be provided on these types. This part of IEC 60645 describes methods of test to be used for approval testing and guidance on methods for undertaking routine calibration. The purpose of this part of IEC 60645 is to ensure that measurements made under comparable test conditions with different instruments complying with the standard will be consistent. Instruments which provide a measurement function not specifically within the scope of the standard shall still comply with any relevant requirements. This standard is not intended to restrict development or incorporation of new features, nor to discourage innovative approaches.
