This part of IEC 60318 describes an acoustic coupler for loading an earphone or hearing aid with a specified acoustic impedance when determining its physical performance characteristics, in the frequency range 125 Hz to 8 kHz. It is suitable for air conduction hearing aids and earphones, coupled to the ear by means of ear inserts e.g. ear moulds or similar devices. The sound pressure developed by an earphone is not, in general, the same in the coupler as in a person’s ear. However, it can be used as a simple and ready means for the exchange of specifications and of physical data on hearing aids and for the calibration of specified insert earphones used in audiometry.

This part of IEC 60118 gives recommendations for the purposes of the measurement of the performance characteristics of air-conduction hearing aids of a particular model for production, supply and delivery assurance purposes. The manufacturer usually assigns nominal values. This standard does not relate to mechanical or environmental tests. It should not be used as the basis for the exchange of information about hearing aid characteristics in general, nor is it intended to be used as abasis for fitting hearing aids to individuals.

This part of IEC 60118 gives recommendations for the measurement of the performance characteristics of air-conduction hearing aids of a particular model for production, supply and delivery quality assurance purposes. The manufacturer will normally assign nominal values. This standard does not relate to mechanical or environmental tests. It should not be used as the basis for the exchange of information about hearing aid characteristics in general, nor is it intended to be used as a predictor for real-ear performance. Though the number of measurements covered by this standard is limited, it is not intended that all measurements described herein shall be made in every case. This second edition now specifies performance requirements. Conformance to the specifications in this standard is demonstrated only when the result of a measurement, extended by the actual expanded uncertainty of measurement of the testing laboratory, lies fully within the tolerances specified in this standard extended by the values for Umax given in Table 4. In case of custom-made in-the-ear instruments, the data supplied by the manufacturer applies only to the particular hearing aid being tested.

This PAS applies to transducers such as loudspeakers, headphones, shakers, and other actuators using either an electro-dynamical or electro-magnetic motor coupled with a mechanical suspension. The measurement results are needed for engineering design purposes and for quality control. The measurement method provides the parameters of a non-linear large signal model (as shown in Figure A.1) which describes the effect of the dominant non-linearities inherent in those transducers. The basic terms and measurement conditions are defined for static and dynamic methods.

This PAS applies to the suspension parts of electroacoustical transducers (for example, loudspeakers). It defines the parameters and measurement method to determine the stiffness of suspension parts like spiders, surrounds, diaphragms or cones before being assembled in the transducer. The measurement results are needed for engineering design purposes and for quality control. Furthermore, this method is intended to improve the correlation of measurements between suspension-part manufacturers and loudspeaker manufacturers. The measurement method provides the effective stiffness, Keff, based on a linear model and the variation of the stiffness, K(x), versus displacement x using a non-linear model. Both parameters are measured dynamically by exciting the suspension part to mechanical vibrations.

This part of IEC 60118 covers all relevant EMC phenomena for hearing aids. EMC phenomena, such as RF emission and electrostatic discharge, are not currently known to be a significant problem in connection with hearing aids and are therefore not dealt with. Based on new knowledge, they could be considered in connection with future revisions or extensions of this standard. Hearing aid immunity to high frequency electromagnetic fields originating from wireless telephone systems is currently identified as the only relevant EMC phenomena regarding hearing aids. IEC 61000-4-3 is the basis for relevant EMC tests to be conducted on hearing aids. Measurement methods and acceptance levels are described in this standard. For the purpose of this part of IEC 60118, two immunity classes of hearing aids are defined (see 3.1) related to their use. "Bystander compatible" is defined as a situation, which ensures that a hearing aid is usable in environments where digital wireless devices are in operation in the proximity of the hearing aid wearer. "User compatible" hearing aids will ensure that a hearing aid is usable when the hearing aid wearer is using a digital wireless device at the wearer?s own aided ear. Measurement methods for hearing aids with non-acoustic outputs and for hearing aids connected to other equipment by cables are not given in this standard.

This report applies to the performance characteristics of hearing aids. Measuring methods that take into account the acoustical influence of the wearer on the performance of hearing aids are important, particularly when the results are to be used to assist in the fitting of hearing aids. The information obtained using this report is likely to be more relevant to the fitting of hearing aids than that provided by publications concerned with type approval and quality control such as IEC Publication 118-0: Hearing Aids: Part 0: Measurement of Electroacoustical Characteristics, and IEC Publication 118-7: Hearing Aids, Part 7: Measurement of Performance Characteristics of Hearing Aids for Quality Inspection for Delivery Purposes. The methods specified in this report require a device such as a manikin to simulate the presence of the wearer. Work on a report for a head and torso simulator is in progress. Pending an agreement on a manikin, it has been found necessary to establish certain guidelines for simulated in situ measurements of hearing aids. The recommended methods are described in this report.

This standard gives recommendations for the measurement of the performance character-istics of air-conduction hearing aids of a particular model for the purpose of comparing measured properties with those specified by the manufacturer. This standard does not relate to mechanical or environmental tests. It should not be used as the basis for the exchange of information about hearing aid characteristics in general, nor is it intended to be used as a basis for fitting hearing aids to individuals. Note. — Terms such as "manufacturer" and "purchaser" are used in this standard. These terms may be understood, however, to refer to the supplier and recipient respectively in any arrangement for the supply of hearing aids in which the use of this standard is called for.

This part of IEC 61094 - gives guidelines for the design of actuators for microphones equipped with electrically conductive diaphragms; - gives methods for the validation of electrostatic actuators; - gives a method for determining the electrostatic actuator response of a microphone. The applications of electrostatic actuators are not fully described within this standard but may include - a technique for detecting changes in the frequency response of a microphone, - a technique for determining the environmental influence on the response of a microphone, - a technique for determining the free-field or pressure response of a microphone without specific acoustical test facilities, by the application of predetermined correction values specific to the microphone model and actuator used, - a technique applicable at high frequencies not typically covered by calibration methods using sound excitation.

This Standard specifies a primary method for the calibration of microphones by the reciprocity technique. The specifications are intended to ensure that primary calibration with the reciprocity technique can attain the highest accuracy. The technical requirement of this American National Standard is identical to International Standard IEC 61094-2: 1992, "Measurement microphones -- Part 2: Primary method for pressure calibration of laboratory standard microphones by the reciprocity technique". Various improvements have been made to include recent technical information.
