To be meaningful, walkway tribometer results must correlate the slip characteristics of a surface or contaminant, or both, to the actual propensity for human slips. To achieve this goal, walkway tribometer models must be validated against a standard with relevance to human ambulation. This practice prescribes a series of reference surfaces with known relative slip potential ranging from very high to low (as defined by laboratory conditions only) upon which walkway tribometer models can be validated. The relative slip potential of each reference surface was established from human subject walking trials. The following should be considered in applying the validation and calibration obtained by this practice: The scientific study upon which the validation process is based was conducted with a select population of young adults (mean age 26 years) who were free from gait deviations while walking in a straight path on a level surface with a mean walking velocity of 2.18 m/s. This walking velocity is faster than the average walking velocity for the general population which includes a much wider age range with greater variability; thus, the study sample population of pedestrians and conditions is not representative of the larger general population of pedestrians. All subjects walked in Oxford-style shoes whose soles were constructed of smooth styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) with 75A Shore hardness. The shoe style and sole material is not representative of all combinations available in the marketplace. The reference surfaces defined in this practice are not representative of all walkway surfaces. The outcome of the validation practice reflects performance on the type of reference surfaces and surface conditions defined in this practice only. Validation and calibration of a walkway tribometer as defined by this practice does not imply validation and calibration under all combinations of test foot materials and walkway surfaces. The validation and calibration procedure defined by this practice is not intended to establish a “safe threshold” value for any walkway surface.1.1 This practice is intended to establish the parameters for validation and calibration of walkway tribometers. 1.2 This practice provides a walkway tribometer supplier with a procedure and suite of reference surfaces to validate his walkway tribometer by properly ranking and differentiating the surfaces. 1.3 This practice provides the user of a walkway tribometer with a procedure and suite of reference surfaces to test calibration of his instrument. 1.4 This practice describes the necessary materials, specifications, and the cleaning process for reference materials, as well as the requirements for the validation of a supplier’s walkway tribometer and calibration of a user’s walkway tribometer. 1.5 This practice applies to walkway tribometers without reference to the nature of the scale of the readings produced by them. The scale used in the reports of validation and calibration must be the same, and are to be those of the instrument or defined for the instrument. 1.6 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only and are not considered standard. 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This guide provides recommended designs and procedures for the fabrication, installation, operation, and reading of settlement platform to determine the magnitude and rate of foundation, fill settlements, or both generally under a fill or embankment load. Two types of settlement platforms are described - those be monitored by elevation surveys from an external bench mark and those that include an internal reference system supported on unyielding soil or rock beneath the compressible layer(s) of interest. This guide does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this guide to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. This guide offers an organized collection of information or a series of options and does not recommend a specific course of action. This document cannot replace education or experience and should be used in conjunction with professional judgement. Not all aspects of this guide may be applicable in all circumstances. This ASTM standard is not intended to represent or replace the standard of care by which the adequacy of a given professional service must be judged, nor should this document be applied without consideration of a project''s many unique aspects. The word "standard" in the title of this document means only that the document has been approved through the ASTM consensus process.

This practice is intended to provide standard requirements for apparatus common to many test methods used in connection with cement and concrete and standardized procedures for its use. The detailed requirements as to materials, mixtures, specimens, conditioning of specimens, number of specimens, ages at which measurements are to be made, interpretation of results, and precision and bias are left to be dealt with in specific test methods. 1.1 This practice covers the requirements for the apparatus and equipment used to prepare specimens for the determination of length change in hardened cement paste, mortar, and concrete, the apparatus and equipment used for the determination of these length changes, and the procedures for its use. 1.2 Methods for the preparation and curing of test specimens, conditions of testing and curing, and detailed procedures for calculating and reporting test results are contained in applicable test methods. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.

This standard establishes safety requirements for the construction, operation, maintenance, and use of scaffolds used in the construction, alteration, demolition, and maintenance of buildings and structures. This standard does not cover permanently installed suspended scaffold systems or aerial platforms. Please note that this standard is based on the 2001 version of the A10.8 Standard, which was administratively withdrawn by ANSI. Since the standard was withdrawn it is viewed/processed as a new standard, but the new document is based on the 2001 administratively withdrawn standard.

This European Standard specifies the general design features, requirements and test methods for portable ladders. It does not apply to step stools or ladders for specific professional use such as firebrigade ladders, roof ladders and mobile ladders. It does not apply to ladders used for work on or near live electrical systems or installations. For this purpose EN 61478 applies. NOTE For insulating ladders for use on or near low voltage electrical installations in the range below 1000 V a.c or 1 500 V d.c. EN 50528 is under preparation. This European Standard is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 131-1. For single or multiple hinge joint ladders EN 131-4 applies.

EN 74-3 specifies for plain and profiled base plates and loose spigots to be used with 48,3 mm diameter tubes in scaffolds and falsework: ? materials; ? design requirements; ? test procedure; ? assessment. A base plate with a means of limited vertical adjustment, called a “base jack”, is dealt with in EN 12811-1.

EN 74-2 specifies: ? materials; ? design requirements; ? specified values for resistances and stiffnesses which a coupler has to achieve under test; ? test procedures and assessment; for the following special couplers: ? screw or wedge half couplers, sleeve couplers with shear studs, right angle reduction couplers and swivel reduction couplers. It gives recommendations for on-going production control. These couplers are for use principally in temporary works. Each coupler is able to be fixed to at least one side to one 48,3 mm diameter steel or aluminium tube. For the other side of reduction couplers, this standard specifies requirements for the diameter and wall thickness of tubes. For testing, screw couplers are tightened with a torque of 50 Nm and wedge couplers are tightened with a 500 g hammer until the jarring blow. Other special half couplers such as half couplers attached by riveting, used mainly for members of prefabricated scaffolds, are outside the scope of this European Standard.

This code of practice makes recommendations for the selection, design, installation, inspection, use and maintenance of temporarily installed suspended access equipment/systems (TSAE), as defined in BS EN 1808. Non?standard installations are covered by this code. Steeplejacks and steeplejack operations are not covered in this standard. This British Standard does not cover permanently installed suspended access equipment, that equipment is covered by BS 6037?1. Requirements for slung scaffolds, being working platforms on scaffold tubes or wire ropes but which cannot be raised or lowered by the user, are contained in BS EN 12811?1. NOTE BS EN 1808 specifies the design and construction requirements relating to the safety of suspended access equipment and is a harmonized standard supporting the provisions of the Machinery Directive [7]. BS EN 1808 is not retrospective and therefore does not relate to equipment manufactured before its introduction in 1999.
