Recycling of deteriorated asphalt pavements is being used with increasing frequency for its economy and benefit of conserving raw materials. The objective of recycling is to reuse the two ingredients of asphalt concrete-aggregate and asphalt and to restore the desired properties to the mixture. Recycling is carried out hot or cold, depending on the condition of the deteriorated pavement, construction procedure, availability of equipment, and cost. This practice is for classifying recycling agents to be used in hot recycling.1.1 This practice covers a standardized method whereby petroleum product additives to be used in hot recycling of asphalt concrete can be identified. The products are classified by viscosity in mm2/s measured at 60°C [140°F]. This Published Document gives guidance on the use of BS EN 12271 and BS EN 12273 in the United Kingdom. BS EN 12271 specifies the properties of surface dressing whilst BS EN 12273 specifies the properties of slurry surfacing and microsurfacing. This Published Document gives guidance on the performance requirements and control procedures for the installation of both surface treatments as products for the maintenance of roads and other trafficked areas. The Published Document does not apply to the following: • surface dressings designed by the purchaser; i.e. the recipe approach for which the contractor is instructed as to the rates of spread, chipping size, etc., and therefore is not responsible for performance requirements; • surface treatments in tunnels where fire regulations apply; • small areas under 500 m2 which are not contiguous, such as patch repair; • airfield pavements covered by international regulations (e.g. International Civil Aviation Organization regulations). NOTE In BS EN 12271 “other trafficked areas” include footways and cycleways.

This part of BS 7533 gives guidance on the design of permeable pavements surfaced with: • concrete paving blocks manufactured in accordance with BS EN 1338; • concrete paving flags manufactured in accordance with BS EN 1339; • natural stone slabs manufactured in accordance with BS EN 1341; • natural stone setts manufactured in accordance with BS EN 1342; and • clay pavers manufactured in accordance with BS EN 1344. and laid in accordance with BS 7533‑3. It applies to all pavements subjected to the usual road spectrum of axle loads up to 8 000 kg, including both highway pavements and light industrial pavements where the traffic is similar in character to highway vehicles. It specifically excludes heavy duty pavements with traffic and other applications such as aircraft pavements and those in ports and specialized industrial areas.

This specification provides the basic minimum criteria for use in evaluating the qualifications of testing or inspection agencies, or both, for road and paving materials. The criteria may be supplemented by more specific criteria and requirements. An individual user can also use it to judge the qualification of an agency. The intent of this specification is to provide a consensus basis for evaluating a testing or inspection agency, or both, with respect to that agency''s capability to objectively and competently provide the specific services needed by the user. This specification can be used as a basis for accreditation.1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements for field and laboratory personnel, for establishing and maintaining a quality system, and establishes minimum qualifications for agencies engaged in the testing and inspection of road and paving materials. 1.2 Criteria are provided for evaluating the capability of an agency to properly perform designated tests on road and paving materials, and for establishing guidelines pertaining to an agency''s organization, personnel, facilities, and quality system. The knowledge of side force friction serves as an additional tool in characterizing pavement surfaces. Side force friction data alone may be of limited value in determining the suitability of paving materials or finishing techniques. However, when used in conjunction with other physical and chemical tests, the side force friction may contribute to characterization of pavement surfaces. The values measured with the equipment and procedures stated herein do not necessarily agree or correlate directly with those obtained by other paved surface friction measuring methods.1.1 This test method covers the measurement of the side force friction of paved surfaces utilizing a device commonly called a Mu-Meter. 1.2 This test method utilizes a measurement obtained by pulling the Mu-Meter, containing two freely rotating test wheels angled to the direction of motion, over a pavement surface at a constant speed while the test wheels are under a constant static load. This method provides data of the side force friction (and other data) along the whole length of the test surface being tested which is applied to a variety of computerized algorithms enabling the production of results including (but not limited to) rolling averages, numeric and graphical representations, friction mapping and reports formatted in the layout approved by a wide variety of national airport regulators. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. This test method can be used to test asphalt concrete mixtures in conjunction with mixture design testing to determine the potential for moisture damage, to determine whether or not an antistripping additive is effective, and to determine what dosage of an additive is needed to maximize the effectiveness. This test method can also be used to test mixtures produced in plants to determine the effectiveness of additives under the conditions imposed in the field.1.1 This test method covers procedures for preparing and testing asphalt concrete specimens for the purpose of measuring the effect of water on the tensile strength of the paving mixture. This European Standard specifies the performance requirements and control procedures for the installation of slurry surfacing as a product for the surface treatment of roads and other trafficked areas (e.g. footways, cycleways). This European Standard is not designed for small areas of slurry surfacing on roads that are less than 500 m2 which are not contiguous (for example minor repairs). This European Standard does not apply to slurry surfacing designed by the purchaser. This European Standard is not applicable to slurry surfacing carried out in tunnels in terms of reaction to fire. No such regulations have yet been identified, nor is there any method of classification of reaction to fire. NOTE Member States can call up the technical requirements of this European Standard for use in tunnels. This European Standard is not designed for pavements that are covered by international regulations, for example, International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations (airfields).
