This European Standard specifies the characteristics and performance of gypsum boards with mat reinforcement intended to be used in building construction works including those intended for secondary manufacturing operations. This European Standard also covers additional technical characteristics that are of importance for the use and acceptance of the product and the reference tests for these characteristics. It provides for the evaluation of conformity of the product to this EN. This European Standard does not cover gypsum boards with mat reinforcement which have been subject to any secondary manufacturing operations (e. g. insulating composite panels, boards with thin lamination etc.). Products covered by EN 520 or EN 13815 are excluded.

This European Standard specifies the characteristics and performance of powder products based on gypsum binder for building purposes. This includes premixed gypsum building plasters for plastering of walls and ceilings inside buildings where they are applied as a finishing material which can be decorated. These products are specially formulated to meet their application requirements by the use of additives/admixtures, aggregates and other binders. Gypsum and gypsum based building plasters for manual and mechanical applications are included. This European Standard also applies to gypsum binders both for direct use on site and for further processing into gypsum blocks, gypsum plasterboards, gypsum boards with fibrous reinforcement, gypsum fibrous plasterwork and gypsum ceiling elements. Gypsum mortar for internal not load bearing partitions not exposed to water is also included. Calcium sulfate used as binder for floor screeds is not covered by this European Standard. This European Standard defines the reference tests for technical characteristics and provides for the evaluation of conformity of the products covered by this European Standard. Building lime, as calcium hydroxide, can be used as an additional binder together with gypsum binder. If gypsum binder is the principle active binding component in a plaster then this plaster is covered by this European Standard. If building lime is the principle active binding component in a plaster then the plaster is covered by EN 998-1.

1.1 This specification covers the gypsum boards described in 1.1.1-1.1.9. Note 18212;Specifications C840, C841, C844 and C1280 contain application procedures for gypsum board. 1.1.1 Gypsum wallboard, designed for use on walls, ceilings, or partitions and that affords a surface suitable to receive decoration. 1.1.2 Predecorated gypsum board, designed for use as the finished surfacing for walls, ceilings, or partitions. 1.1.3 Gypsum backing board, coreboard, and shaftliner board, designed for use as a base in multilayer systems or as a gypsum stud or core in semisolid or solid gypsum board partitions, or in shaft wall assemblies. Note 28212;The terms backing board, coreboard, and shaftliner board refer to different end uses. The term gypsum backing board, as used in this specification, shall include gypsum coreboard and gypsum shaftliner board unless otherwise stated. 1.1.4 Water-resistant gypsum backing board, designed primarily to be used as a base for the application of ceramic or plastic tile on walls or ceilings. This product is also suitable for decoration. 1.1.5 Exterior gypsum soffit board, designed for use on exterior soffits and carport ceilings that are completely protected from contact with liquid water. 1.1.6 Gypsum sheathing board, designed for use as sheathing on buildings. 1.1.7 Gypsum base for veneer plaster, designed for use as a base for the application of gypsum veneer plaster. 1.1.8 Gypsum lath, designed for use as a base for the application of gypsum plaster. 1.1.9 Gypsum ceiling board, designed for use on interior ceilings with framing spaced not more than 24 in. [610 mm] on center and that affords a surface suitable to receive water-based texture and other decoration. This product is also suitable for use on interior walls.

1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements for and methods of application of gypsum sheathing for use as a substrate for exterior wall cladding. 1.2 Details of construction for a specific assembly to achieve the required fire resistance shall be obtained from reports of fire-resistance tests, engineering evaluations, or listings from recognized fire testing laboratories. 1.2.1 This specification shall govern where it is more stringent (size or thickness of framing and size and spacing of fasteners) than the fire-rated construction. 1.3 Where sound control is required for a gypsum sheathing assembly, the details of construction shall be in accordance with the acoustical test report of an assembly that has met the required acoustical value(s). 1.3.1 This specification shall govern where it is more stringent (size or thickness of framing and size and spacing of fasteners) than the sound-rated construction. 1.4 Where resistance to racking loads or shear is required for a gypsum sheathing assembly, the details of construction shall be in accordance with the racking or shear test report of an assembly that has met the required racking or shear value(s). 1.4.1 This specification shall govern where it is more stringent (size or thickness of framing and size and spacing of fasteners) than the racking or shear-tested construction. 1.5 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. This European Standard specifies the characteristics and performance of gypsum blocks with smooth faces for which the main intended uses are construction of non-load bearing partitions or independent wall linings and the fire protection of columns, lift shafts, etc. The gypsum blocks are not used to build ceilings. It covers the following performance characteristics related to the essential requirements: ? reaction to fire; ? resistance to fire; ? direct airborne sound insulation; ? release of dangerous substances; to be measured according to the corresponding European test methods, as well as: ? thermal resistance, to be calculated from the thermal conductivity values given in 4.3.2. It describes the reference tests for technical specifications. This European Standard also covers additional technical characteristics that are of importance for the use and acceptance of the product by the construction industry: ? convenience class for density; ? convenience class for pH; ? surface hardness. It provides for the evaluation of conformity of the product to this European Standard. This European Standard does not cover gypsum blocks of thickness less than 50 mm or gypsum storey height units.
