This European Standard specifies the common requirements and test methods concerning, in particular the construction, safety, fitness for purpose, and rational use of energy, as well as the classification, marking and energy labelling of gas-fired central heating boilers that are fitted with atmospheric burners, fan assisted atmospheric burners or fully premixed burners, and are hereafter referred to as "boilers". This European Standard is to be used in conjunction with the specific Parts 2 (Part 2-1 and following ones). This European Standard applies to boilers of types B and C. NOTE For further background information on appliance types see CEN/TR 1749:2014 [1]. a) that use one or more combustible gases of the three gas families at the pressures stated in EN 437; b) where the temperature of the heat transfer fluid does not exceed 105 °C during normal operation; c) where the maximum operating pressure in the water circuit does not exceed 6 bar; d) which can give rise to condensation under certain circumstances; e) which are declared in the installation instructions to be either a "condensing" boiler or a "low temperature boiler" or a "standard boiler" or an "other boiler". If no declaration is given the boiler is to be considered both a "standard boiler" and an "other boiler"; NOTE The Ecodesign Directive defines "other boilers", "low temperature boilers" and "condensing boilers". The Boiler Efficiency Directive defines "standard boilers", "low temperature boilers" and "condensing boilers". Depending on the legislation applied, a boiler can be both "a standard boiler" and an "other boiler". f) which are intended to be installed inside a building or in a partially protected place; g) which are intended to produce hot water either by the instantaneous or storage principle, the whole being marketed as a single unit. This European Standard applies to boilers designed for sealed water systems or for open water systems. This general standard and the specific standards (see Part 2) provide requirements for boilers with known constructions. For boilers with any alternative constructions, which might not fully be covered by this standard or a specific standard, the risk associated with this alternative construction will need to be assessed. An example of an assessment methodology, based upon risk assessment, is given in Clause 11. This European Standard is not intended to cover appliances intended for connection to gas grids where the quality of the distributed gas is likely to vary to a large extent over the lifetime of the appliance.

This European Standard is applicable to gas-fired appliances producing domestic hot water. It applies to both instantaneous and storage tank appliances; waters-heaters and combination boilers that have: a heat input not exceeding 70 kW; and a hot water storage tank capacity (if any) not exceeding 500 l. In the case of combination boilers, with or without storage tank, domestic hot water production is integrated or coupled, the whole being marketed as a single unit. EN 13203-1 sets out in qualitative and quantitative terms the performance in delivery of domestic hot water for a selected variety of uses. It also gives a system for presenting the information to the user. The present document sets out a method for assessing the energy performance of the appliances. It defines a number of daily tapping cycles for each domestic hot water use, kitchen, shower, bath and a combination of these, together with corresponding test procedures, enabling the energy performances of different gas-fired appliances to be compared and matched to the needs of the user. Where other technologies are combined with a gas-fired boiler or a water heater to produce domestic hot water, specific parts of EN 13203 apply.

1.1This standard provides guidance for gas operatives on: a)the general use of an electronic portable combustion gas analyser conforming to BS EN 50379-3 and BS 7927:1998 incorporating Amendment No.1:1999; NOTE 1 This standard assumes that a portable combustion gas analyser [often referred to colloquially as a "flue gas analyser" (FGA)J of the type specified in BS EN 50379-3 or BS 7927:1998 incorporating Amendment No. 1:1999 is available to the gas operative and the operative is competent in its use and the interpretation of any reading obtained. This competence can be demonstrated by satisfactory completion of the relevant ACS assessments,which cover the use of electronic portable combustion gas analysers. See Clause 4 for further information on competence. NOTE 2 BS EN 50379-3 superseded BS 7927:1998 incorporating Amendment No. 1:1999 on I March 2007. However,electronic portable combustion gas analysers conforming to BS 7927:1998 incorporating Amendment No. 1:1999 remain acceptable for the purposes of this standard. b)the use of such an electronic portable combustion gas analyser to determine ambient levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and, in certain circumstances (see Notes 4 and 5, and Commentary on 8.1), detect the presence of carbon dioxide (CO) in dwellings; NOTE 3 A definition of a dwelling is given in 3.7. NOTE 4 One of the main combustion products from gas appliances is CO, which is mainly regarded as an asphyxiant, but is also a toxic substancc which could be present in the air in sufficient quantity to prove harmful. For guidance on the occupational health considerations of CO, reference can be made to the HSE Guidance note on Workplace exposure limits,EH4012005 [8]. NOTE 5 Electronic portable combustion gas analysers that calculate CO levels from an oxygen (O) measurement are: ?well proven for calculating CO levels in combustion gases in the flue of an appliance; ?not suitable for measuring ambient levels of CO in dwellings; and ?able to detect increases in the ambient CO levels in ambient atmospheres and such increases in CO will provide an early indication of increasing build-up of products of combustion in the room (see Commentary on 8.1). c)the use of an electronic portable combustion gas analyser to measure CO and CO in combustion products from the following types of gas-fired appliances: 1)flueless appliances (type A appliances); 2)open-flue appliances (type B appliances); 3)room-sealed appliances (type C appliances); and 4)all appliances for which the gas appliance manufacturer has provided a purpose-designed sampling point or specific sampling instructions; NOTE 6 Type A, type B and type C classification of gas-fired appliances is described in PD CENITR 1749 and in 3.21. d)the use of an electronic portable combustion gas analyser as a diagnostic instrument to assist a gas operative: 1)in confirming safe and/or efficient operation at the time of commissioning, in accordance with gas appliance instructions; 2)in determining the level of servicing required for a gas-fired appliance;
