This European Standard specifies the testing for acceptance of the running characteristics of freight vehicles with static axle loads higher than 225 kN and up to 250 kN. All requirements of EN 14363 are applicable with some adaptations concerning: ? the conditions of line tests; ? limit values for some assessment quantities. Only differences for the special cases are listed. The testing of the running characteristics applies principally to all freight vehicles, which operate without restriction on standard gauge tracks (1 435 mm).

This European Standard specifies minimum structural requirements for freight wagon bodies and associated specific equipment such as: roof, side and end walls, door, stanchion, fasteners and attachments. It defines also special requirements for the freight wagon bodies when the wagon is equipped with crashworthy buffers. It defines the loads sustained by vehicle bodies and specific equipment, gives material data, identifies its use and presents principles and methods to be used for design validation by analysis and testing. For this design validation, two methods are given: ? one based on loadings, tests and criteria based upon methods used previously by the UIC rules and applicable only for vehicle bodies made of steel; ? one based on the method of design and assessment of vehicles bodies given in EN 12663-1. For this method, the load conditions to be applied to freight wagons are given in this European Standard. They are copied in the EN 12663-1 in order to facilitate its use when applied to freight wagons. The freight wagons are divided into categories which are defined only with respect to the structural requirements of the vehicle bodies. Some freight wagons do not fit into any of the defined categories; the structural requirements for such freight wagons should be part of the specification and be based on the principles presented in this European Standard. The standard applies to all freight wagons within the EU and EFTA territories. The specified requirements assume operating conditions and circumstances such as are prevalent in these countries.

1.1 - All wagons built from 1 January 1985 must be fitted with 105 mm stroke buffers as defined in the present leaflet. Nora : In the case of wagons built before 1 January 1985, use of these buffers is recommended. Wagon buffers must comply with either: - the provisions in this leaflet, or - the provisions in UIC Leaflets 526-2 et 526-3 (see Bibliography - page 28). 1.2 - The different 105 mm stroke buffers are classified according to their performance. The energy storage capacity is defined in Appendix G - page 19. 1.3 - In service, wagons must always have two identical buffers at each end.

1.1 - Multiple wagons A wagon composed of permanently-coupled units, or multiple wagon, is a combination formed by several frame-bodies, each of which is equipped with running gear permitting it to be moved individually, for example, on a workshop track. This combination is provided at the two ends with draw and buffer gear of the conventional type (according to UIC Leaflets 520 and 526-1 - see Bibliography - page 11). Coupling between units is obtained by means of special components which cannot be separated in normal operations. A multiple wagon can be formed either from 2-axle vehicles or from bogie vehicles. When the wagon is composed of two units, it is called a couple. 1.2- Articulated wagon An articulated wagon is a wagon formed from units connected to one another by an articulation arranged at right angles with the intermediate running gear. It contains at least 3 axis or 3 bogies.

This Standard does not cover light rail vehicles, automated people movers, and freight, commuter, high speed or any other rail vehicles under the jurisdiction of the Federal Railroad Administration. It does not cover structural repairs, fatigue, corrosion, fire protection, interior vehicle design or emergency egress from vehicle.

Under the terms of the present document, a freight train is considered "interoperable" when the administrative formalities and technical inspections associated with its consist can be: dispensed with when crossing a border between two railway infrastructure managers (IM); dispensed with or limited to a few basic tasks (e.g. transfer of the original braking sheet during a changeover of traction) at the handover point between two partner railway undertakings (RU). In the present document, UIC provides RUs with a catalogue of the tools that will help make their trains interoperable on all freight corridors and other international routes. The catalogue has been designed to offer a set of harmonised procedures for international freight operations covering the following train consist parameters: train formation, braking rules and brake tests, acceptance of certain types of shipment, such as dangerous goods, special consignments, etc., permissible lengths and loads, tightening of couplers, loading conditions, technical inspection of wagons and loads, braking sheet and consist list, tail signals, train numbering, advance consist message.

It applies to new and modified bogies with 2 wheelsets. Provisions going beyond the scope of these requirements are generally agreed between the contracting parties involved.
