This European Standard provides specifications for two types of variable message signs (VMS); i.e. continuous (see 3.4) and discontinuous (see 3.7). This European Standard covers mobile, temporary and permanently installed VMS used in circulation areas, on public and private land, including tunnels for the information, guidance, warning and/or direction of traffic. Test modules are used to demonstrate compliance with the requirements. This European Standard specifies visual and physical characteristics of VMS as well as their durability aspects. It also provides relevant requirements and corresponding test methods, assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP) and marking. NOTE Provisions for the evaluation of conformity with regards to type testing are further specified in 6.2; provisions with regards to factory production control (FPC) are further specified in 6.3. This European Standard does not cover a) sign gantries, cantilevers, posts (supports) and foundations, b) signal heads, c) sizes and shapes of VMS messages, d) control units and monitoring units unless inside the VMS, e) control of sign luminance.

This SAE standard outlines the steps and known accepted methodologies and standards for linking Model V&V with model based product reliability assessments. The standard's main emphasis is that quantified values for Model-based product reliability must be accompanied by a quantified confidence value if the users of the model wish to claim use of a "Verified and Validated" model, and if they wish to further link into business and investment decisions that are informed by quantitative second-order risk and benefit cost considerations. The purpose of this standard is to provide a process for linking demonstrated and accepted standards for Model V&V with peer reviewed and published methods and standards for model based assessments of product reliability. The result will be a standard that enables a design process providing validated model based assessments of product reliability at a quantified confidence level. This will justify and enhance the success of investments and business decisions that are based on model assessments of product reliability. RATIONALE: SAE has numerous standards relating to the use of models, and product reliability. Other professional organizations (AIAA, ASME, DoD, NASA, etc) have recent standards for Model Verification & Validation (V&V). Lacking, however, is a standard relating the increasing use of numerical and computer Model V&V to quantitative design assessments of product reliability. It is the intent of SAE J2940 to provide such a standard.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes a uniform procedure for assuring the manufactured quality, installed utility and performance of automotive products to the relocation, alteration, replacement and/or extension of secondary controls and systems other than those provided by the vehicle manufacturer (OEM). These products are intended to provide driving capability to persons with physical disabilities. These products function as adaptive modifications to compensate for lost or reduced function in the extremities of the driver.
