This SAE Recommended Practice provides a system for classification and specification for limited number of polyamides (nylons) used in the automotive Industry. Based upon ASTM D 4066, Classification system for nylon Injection and Extrusion Materials (PA), it calls for additional descriptive characteristics and properties commonly used in the automotive Industry. This document applies to natural and non-color matched black, heat- stabilized polyamide compounds only. Color matched compounds shall be defined by the proprietary OEM standards. This document allows for the use of recycled, reconstituted, and regrind materials provided that the requirements as stated in this document are met, the material has not been altered or modified to change its suitability for safe processing and use, and the material shall be identified as such.

The practice described applies to textile and flexible plastic parts and materials used in automotive vehicles. Special care should be taken when high pile carpet samples are being evaluated. The intent of this SAE Recommended Practice is to specify procedures for the instrumental measurement of color differences brought about by the exposure of textile and flexible plastic automotive parts to various colorfastness tests. This SAE Standard covers two types of hose fabricated from textile reinforcement and synthetic rubber, assembled with end fittings for use in high-temperature automotive power steering applications as flexible connections within the temperature range of -40 to +149 degrees C (-40 to +300 degrees F) maximum and 10.3 MPa (1500 psi) maximum working pressure. these hoses are intended for use in applications where reduction in amplitude of pump pressure pulsations is required. Class A hose has a nominal OD of 19.84 mm (0.781 in). Class B hose is a lightweight hose with a nominal OD of 17.91 mm (0.705 in). This specification defines the minimum performance levels of a flexible connector in the hydraulic steering system to convey power steering fluid from the steering pump to the steering gear.
