The intent of this practice is to precisely specify procedures for instrumental color difference measurement of colored parts or colored materials incorporated in the manufacture of vehicles. The recommended practice provides a consistent engineering practice for determination of color difference, for numerical communication of color difference, and for determination of acceptance or rejection compared to numerical tolerances. The practice is intended to be used as a specification and means of communication for color part acceptance in a buyer-seller agreement. The practice applies to parts and materials used in vehicles manufacture which are intended to be acceptable color matches to a specified color standard. This practice is intended for use with parts or materials which are opaque or nearly so and does not apply to transparent materials. Materials covered by this practice include topcoat paint finishes, interior soft trim, and exterior hard trim, and exterior film.

Electroplating is a process whereby an object is coated with one or more relatively thin, tightly adherent layers of one or more metals. It is accomplished by placing the object to be coated on a plating rack or a fixture, or in a basket or in a rotating container in such a manner that a suitable current may flow through it, and then immersing it in a series of solutions and rinses in planned sequence. The advantage to be gained by electroplating may be considerable; broadly speaking, the process is used when it is desired to endow the basis material (selected for cost, material conservation, and physical property reasons) with surface properties it does not possess. It should be noted that although electroplating is the most widely used process for applying metals to a substrate, they may also be applied by spraying, vacuum deposition, cladding, hot dipping, chemical reduction, mechanical plating, etc. The purpose for applying an electroplate and the metals used for various applications follow.

This standard covers requirements for several types and grades of electrodeposited nickel/chromium coatings on ferrous or copper alloy basis metals and copper/nickel/chromium on zinc or aluminum alloys for the finishing and corrosion protection of decorative ornamentation and hardware of motor vehicles and marine controls and fittings. Four grades of coatings are provided to correlate with the service conditions under which each is expected to provide satisfactory performance, namely: very severe, severe, moderate, and mild. Definitions and typical examples of these service conditions are provided in Appendix A.1 Information contained in this document generally conforms to the information contained in ASTM B 456, Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings of Nickel plus Chromium.

This SAE Recommended Practice contains a series of test methods for use in measuring characteristics of automotive- type sealers, adhesives, and deadeners. The specific temperatures and times at which some of these tests are to be conducted are not dictated in these test procedures, but they will be found in the material standards which govern each type of material to be tested.
