The array method provides objective measurements for determining the fiber length and length distribution in a sample of cotton. The results can be plotted to show the length-weight distribution of all the fibers in the sample. Data obtained from array tests are useful in fiber length research studies, for investigation of changes in fiber length distribution in ginning and mill processing, and for other research purposes. Upper quartile length is correlated with, but usually longer than, Fibrograph and 2.5 % span length as defined in Test Method D1447. Judgment must be used in making comparisons between length measures from arrays and measures obtained by other methods, which may be basically different. The coefficient of length variation is a measure of length distribution, or nonuniformity of length. Because the fiber weight-length distribution is usually highly skewed, statistical judgments based on the assumption of normality are not justified. The array method makes a physical separation of fibers of different lengths. It therefore serves as a standard, or benchmark, with which other methods may be compared and by which their precision and accuracy may be judged. Test Method D1440 for testing length and length distribution of cotton fibers (array method) is not commonly used for acceptance testing of commercial shipments. a and cBanks of combs. bForceps, tips padded with hard leather, for transferring fibers from one set of combs to the other. dDepressor for placing fibers in combs. fDissecting needle. gFork for scooping up fiber groups off velvet surface. hAluminum plate covered with velvet cloth. iSpecial rule for measuring length of fiber groups. kSmooth plate for placing fibers onto velvet surfaces. lWire rack for holding fiber groups wrapped in papers. mSmooth pointed tweezers. nLift for raising combs in place. oRack for holding velvet-covered boards. pVelvet-covered boards on which several pulls have been arrayed. Option A for bundle weighing of Test Method D1577 is used in the trade for acceptance testing of commercial shipments. Option B for single-fiber weighing and Option C for the vibroscope may be used for acceptance testing (see Section 37); however, caution is advised when using Option B or Option C because between-laboratory precision information is incomplete. Comparative tests as directed in 4.1.1 may be advisable. In case of dispute arising from differences in reported test results when using Test Method D1577 for acceptance testing of commercial shipments, the purchaser and the supplier should conduct comparative tests to determine if there is a statistical bias between their laboratories. Competent statistical assistance is recommended for the investigation of bias. As a minimum, the two parties should take a group of samples that are as homogeneous as possible and that are from a lot of material of the type in question. These samples should then be randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory for testing. The average results from the two laboratories should be compared using the appropriate statistical analysis and a probability level chosen by the two parties before testing is begun. If a bias is found, either the cause must be found and corrected or the purchaser and the supplier must agree to interpret future test results for that material with consideration to the known bias. Option A for bundle weighing is generally considered to be the referee procedure for acceptance testing. Option A is not recommended for measurement of linear density of blends of production fibers having different nominal linear densities. The accuracy of the linear density values obtained by Options A and B is dependent upon the accuracy with which the fibers can be cut and weighed. Note 28212;On short staple fiber, an accuracy in cutting of 1.0 % is difficult to obtain. This problem is further complicated if crimp is present in the fibers. The accuracy of weighing can be controlled by the number of fibers composing the bundle. However, with short fiber of low linear density the number of fibers to be counted becomes prohibitive unless the bundle mass is kept low. Options A and B are fundamental procedures which are used to standardize the vibroscope equipment used in Options C1 and C2. Test Method Options B and C are most useful for the measurement of linear density of single fibers when further tests upon the same test specimen are required, for example, tension tests and adjustment of the data obtained for the linear density of the test specimen. These options offer advantages in accuracy and ease of operations over calculation from specific gravity and microscopically measured cross-sectional area. Additional information specific to Option C is in Section 26.1.1 These test methods cover the measurement of mass per unit length (linear density) of textile fibers and filaments. Direct weighing and vibroscope procedures with modifications for crimped and uncrimped fibers are included. The options and sections are listed below. The purpose of this practice is to provide guiding principles for the use of reference standard cottons for the standardization of instruments and techniques to obtain reproducible test results (within statistical limits) when the tests are performed on samples of cotton fibers by the same or different operators at the same or different times, both within the same laboratory and in different laboratories. Results obtained on cotton fiber tests on the same sample may vary widely due to differences in instruments and operator techniques. Some variation in test result levels can be controlled by the physical adjustment of instruments in accordance with manufacturers' instruction. Instrument adjustments are made only to cause instrument values to coincide with specified calibration points established by the manufacturer. Other variations in cotton fiber test results are caused by differences in technique used in specimen preparation, errors in reading test values from scales, variation in the reference standard, and sampling errors in specimen selection. It is necessary that the mean value of at least four sets of determinations per operator-instrument be used in order to form a sound basis for any adjustment of technique or for the use of correction factors. In comparing results of different operators and different laboratories, for example, between the purchaser and the seller, it is essential that all results be obtained on replicate specimens. Values obtained on individual samples, as well as on a reference standard are never absolute, but have a normal variation about their mean due to heterogeneity of the sample. Therefore confidence limits of a test value are dependent upon the within laboratory variance for the test and the sampling error. The level of the results in different laboratories will be comparable only to the extent of the use of the same reference standards in both laboratories. Any one set of determinations on a reference standard may be within the statistical limits of this reference standard cotton approximately 67 % of the time. The mean of a minimum of four sets of tests, as set out in the specific test procedure, is required to establish a reliable mean value for the determination of the test level. Caution should be exercised in the adjustment of instrument or technique on the basis of preliminary results on the working cotton standard or calibration cotton standard because of the variation within these reference standards. When the mean value of the initial test results on a reference standard cotton falls within one unit standard deviation of the established values, testing may be started on samples of cotton fiber to be tested. If the mean value does not fall within two standard deviation units, recheck the instrument adjustments and test an additional set of test specimens from the reference standard cotton. The mean value of these two sets of determinations, where instrument checks have shown the adjustments (instruments) to be in order, may then be used as a basis for modification of technique, or if correction factors are to be used, the basis for the initiation of testing of unknown samples. Correction factors should be based on determinations made before, during, and at the completion of routine testing.1.1 This practice covers the use of reference standard cottons for the standardization of instruments and techniques used to test cotton fibers in various laboratories. 1.2 Standardization may be achieved by application of a correction factor based on the reference standards, or by modification of the technique in use. Note 18212;When reference standards are used to develop correction factors, or to adjust an operator's technique, no instrument calibration processes are involved. The term “Calibration
