1.1 This specification covers manifold papers used in preparing typewritten copies of permanent or semipermanent records and documents. The original, or ribbon, copy usually leaves the organization in which it originated, so the carbon copy becomes the copy of record. 1.2 It has been shown (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) that permanence is at least an approximate function of the pH of an aqueous extract of the paper with correlation coefficients ranging from approximately 0.7 to 0.9 (4). Three pH levels, reflecting three levels of permanence, are specified. Extract pH as an indicator of life expectancy is not valid if a paper has been treated with an alkaline surface size or if an alkaline coating has been applied. 1.3 The following would be expected to contribute significantly to the life expectancy of manifold papers: the use of papers with controlled acidity, or of papers manufactured under neutral or alkaline conditions, especially papers with a calcium carbonate filler that absorbs acidic gases from the atmosphere and can neutralize acidic materials formed in the aging of paper. 1.4 This specification is based on fiber sources used in the production of paper that contains no more than 1% lignin, for papers used in archives, libraries, and other permanent records. However, under proper conditions, (see Appendix X1.5), paper containing more than 1% lignin may be employed for many other end uses in paper for records that are required to have a substantial life expectancy.

The primary purpose of these tests is to obtain information from a statistical sampling of a lot or shipment of paper that will predict how well the whole lot will resist capsular damage from normal handling processes, either in manufacturing or in subsequent processing, storage, and use. Other aspects of significance are covered in 1.2.1.1 The test procedures of this practice are applicable to any carbonless paper product that employs a coating of micro-capsules bonded to one side of the paper wherein the active material within the capsules is a colorless reactant capable of generating color when the capsules are broken and the contained solution is simultaneously transferred to a reactive receptor surface capable of changing the chemical from a colorless to a colored condition. 1.2 The procedures are designed to demonstrate the extent of damage incurred by (1) controlling the rate of slippage of test units held in contact with each other under a calibrated weight and (2) by the controlled application of pressure to test units held stationary with respect to each other. 1.2.1 The first test procedure is designed to demonstrate the resistance to capsular damage related to plies slipping under pressure. 1.2.2 The second test procedure is designed to demonstrate the resistance to capsular damage related only to pressure, such as between plies within rolls, between sheets in a stack or due to nip effects in web processing, converting, or end-use equipment. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of whoever uses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The absorptive characteristics, both rate and capacity, are of great importance in creped tissue papers made for use as absorbent sanitary tissue products, such as toweling and tissue. The absorptive characteristics, both rate and capacity, are of great importance in creped tissue or similar papers produced for incorporation into composite absorbent structures, such as disposable bed pads, and composite disposable absorbent structures containing an absorbent paper component such as hospital disposable bed pads and related products. This test method provides a standardized approach to the dynamic evaluation of both absorptive rate and absorptive capacity of materials such as those in 5.1 and 5.2. 1.1 This test method determines the liquid sorption of bibulous paper, paperboard, and paper products using gravimetric principles. 1.1.1 The procedure in this test method describes testing of absorbent materials such as those in 1.1. Similar testing may be done on composite absorbent products, incorporating cellulose and nonwoven fabrics, polymer films, or other similar materials for use such as absorbent pads, wipes, and so on with slight modification. This test method does not describe the application of this technique to textiles. 1.2 The standard test liquid is distilled water. 1.2.1 Other test liquids of interest may be used if desired, provided they are compatible with the liquid delivery system specified. 1.2.1.1 Examples of such test liquids include, but are not limited to, buffered solutions of distilled water, fruit or vegetable juices, milk, synthetic body liquids such as urine, and organic fluids such as salad oil, cooking oil, motor oil, and others. 1.3 The test liquid is delivered at an effective negative head pressure after initiating liquid flow (wicking). This allows the controlling sorptive properties to be demand wettability, the ability of the specimen to absorb through capillarity and surface wetting. 1.3.1 Using the equipment and principles described, absorption at other instrument configurations and head pressures, as well as desorption may be measured. 1.4 This test method measures both the rate and capacity of liquid sorption through demand wettability or wicking. Liquid capacity is defined as the point in the analysis where the sorption rate falls below 3.0 mg in 5 s. Agreed intermediate points are measured during the analysis to determine rate. 1.5 An analog or digital report of the sorptive behavior of the test specimen may be produced, if desired, to further characterize its sorptive behavior. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
