This standard applies to electrolytes and their components when used in vented nickel-cadmium cells. These electrolytes are used: - for filling cells supplied without filling electrolyte, and/or - for refilling cells if change of electrolyte is required, and/or - if the operating electrolyte needs to be topped up with water provided no specific recommendations from the manufacturer are available.

The purpose of this technical report is to acquaint equipment and system application engineers with the technical aspects of possible hazards. It is the designer’s responsibility to interpret this information into the application design and the user instructions. In the case of single cells or batteries sold directly by the manufacturer to the end-user, the manufacturer should supply this information. This technical report outlines the fundamental conditions necessary for the creation of each hazard. It includes identification and characterization of the possible hazards inherent in the application, use and abuse of nickel-cadmium cells and batteries. It also includes examples for appliance design which minimize these hazards. Additionally, it presents some typical but nonexhaustive examples of misuse that may precipitate, or actions which mitigate, the hazard. The possible hazards that are the subject of this report are: a) hydrogen explosion; b) pressure rupture; c) chemical burns (electrolyte); d) high power levels (shorting, fire); e) high voltage levels (shock); f) thermal runaway; g) disposal; h) miscellaneous. These hazards are considered first in general, and then in terms of conditions specific for sealed cells and for vented cells.

This International standard specifies marking, tests and requirements for sealed nickelcadmium prismatic secondary single cells. NOTE In this context “prismatic” refers to cells having rectangular sides and bases. Where there exists an IEC standard specifying test conditions and requirements for cells used in special applications and which is in conflict with this standard, the former takes precedence.

This International Standard specifies marking@ tests and requirements for lithium secondary cells and batteries used in industrial applications including stationary applications. When there exists an IEC standard specifying test conditions and requirements for cells used in special applications and which is in conflict with this standard@ the former takes precedence. (e.g. IEC 62660 series on road vehicles). The following are some examples of applications that utilize the cells and batteries under the scope of this standard. Stationary applications: telecom@ uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)@ electrical energy storage system@ utility switching@ emergency power and similar applications. Motive applications: fork-lift truck@ golf cart@ AGV@ railway@ and marine@ excluding road vehicles. Since this standard covers batteries for various industrial applications@ it includes those requirements@ which are common and minimum to the various applications. This standard applies to cells and batteries. If the battery is divided into smaller units@ the smaller unit can be tested as the representative of the battery. The manufacturer clearly declares the tested unit. The manufacturer may add functions@ which are present in the final battery@ to the tested unit.
