This test method provides a means for resin producers and users as well as solvent and varnish manufacturers to rate various types of resins for solubility by assigning a numerical dilutability value. This percent dilutability value can be used to differentiate resin types for end users and can be utilized as a quality control tool by resin manufacturers. When running a series of these tests, the same lot or batch of dilution solvent must be used throughout to ensure reproducible results.1.1 This test method covers both volumetric and gravimetric determination of resin solution dilutability which gives a numerical value for the overall solubility of the resin expressed as percent dilutability. 1.2 This test method is applicable only if the test solution is of sufficient clarity to allow accurate visual judgement of the end point and of low enough viscosity for efficient mixing to take place. 1.3 This test method is primarily for, but not limited to, resins used in the printing ink industry. 1.4 The percent solvent tolerance of a resin can be determined using this test method if the solvent in the resin solution and the dilution solvent are the same. 1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This part of ISO 13885 describes the determination of the molar-mass distribution, number-average molar mass Mn and mass-average molar mass Mw of polymers that are soluble in THF (tetrahydrofuran) by gel permeation chromatography (GPC)I). It is possible that, in spite of the good repeatability obtained with this method, it cannot be used with certain polymer types because of specific interactions, such as adsorption within the sample/eluentJcolumn system. The method is not an absolute one and requires calibration with commercially available unbranched- polystyrene standards that have been characterized by absolute methods. The results for samples of polymers other than polystyrene are therefore only comparable within groups of samples of the same type. The conditions specified in this part of ISO 13885 are not suitable for the GPC analysis of polymer samples with .~/w values greater than 106 (see Annex C). No correction methods, e.g. for the elimination of peak broadening, are included in this part of ISO 13885. If absolute molar-mass values are required, an absolute method, e.g. membrane osmometry for .Un or light scattering for Mw, must be used.

The test procedures described in this standard were developed when the chief use for turpentine was as a solvent. Currently however, the chief use for turpentine (and pinenes) is as raw materials for the production of resins and synthetic organic chemicals. Thus the chemical composition of turpentines and pinenes is extremely important and tests, in addition to the ones described in these test methods, are required in order to fully characterize turpentines and pinenes. The most widely used technique for determining the chemical composition of turpentines (and pinenes) is gas chromatography (see Test Methods D 6387).1.1 These test methods cover procedures for sampling and testing turpentine, as defined by the Code of Federal Regulations and Terminology D 804. These test methods are also used for the sampling and testing of pinenes, the major components of most turpentines. 1.2 These test methods primarily measure the physical rather than the chemical properties of turpentines and pinenes. As turpentines and pinenes are currently used chiefly as chemical raw materials for the production of resins and synthetic organic chemicals, chemical composition is also very important. Consequently, testing the chemical composition of turpentines and pinenes by gas chromatography has displaced these test methods to a large extent. (See for example Test Methods D 6387.) 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. This international Standard specifies a titrimetric metohd for determining the esterified-acid content in binders for paints and varnishes,free acids and acid anhydrides being necessarily included in the result obtained. Because different binders vary in their resistance to saponification,this international Standard is of limited applicability.If necessary,completeness of saponification may be checked by repeating the test under more severe conditions achieved by the use of longer saponification time,more concentrated potassium hydroxide solution,or a higher-boiling alcohol as solvent. Annex A specifies a procedure suitable for binders that saponify with difficulty. Themethod is not applicable to those materials that show further reaction with alkalis beyond normal saponification.
