The oil absorption value obtained by this test method provides information about the vehicle demand of the pigment when it is used in a pigment paste. Oil absorption values can be used to characterize batches of a given pigment. This test method differs from Test Method D281 in that D281 requires a vigorous rubbing action whereas this test method involves only a gentle stirring and folding of the pigment. Because the end points are different, the values obtained from the two test methods generally differ.1.1 This test method covers the determination of oil absorption of pigments by the Gardner-Coleman procedure. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. This International Standard specifies a method for determining the solubility of dyestuffs in organic solvents. It is applicable to dyestuffs that do not change chemically under the influence of the solvent, are stable and non volatile under the specified drying conditions. For volatile solvents (boiling point lower 120 ℃) we generally recommend a gravimetric, for less volatile solvents (boiling point greater 120 ℃) a photometric procedure. The individual selection should be taken on a problem specific base. The method is suitable for concentrations between 1 g and 1000 g of dyestuff per litre of solvent. In case of higher concentration the viscosity of the test solutions must be suitable for the described procedures. The method is not suitable for the determination of insoluble matter in a dyestuff.

This part of ISO 787 specifies a general method of test for determining the residue on sieve from a sample of pigment or extender dispersed in water. ISO 787-18, General methods of test for pigments and extenders - Part 18: Determination of residue on sieve - Mechanical flushing procedure, specifies a general method of test for determining the residue on sieve from a sample of pigment or extender by a mechanical flushing procedure. For most pigments and extenders, ISO 787-7 and ISO 787-18 will usually give different results, and it is therefore essential to state clearly in a specification which method is to be used and, in the test report, which method has been used. NOTE The general methods given in the various parts of ISO 787 are usually applicable to any pigment or extender. Thus only a cross-reference to the appropriate part of ISO 787 needs to be included in the International Standard giving the specification for that pigment or extender, indicating any detailed modifications that may be needed in view of the special properties of the material in question. Only when the general methods are not applicable to a particular material should a different method for determination of residue on sieve be specified.

The nonvolatile content and pigment content are measures of total solids and inorganic pigment solids, respectively, in electrocoat paints. In addition to production quality control, these properties are important in maintaining electrocoat baths in the optimum range. This International Standard specifies the requirements and the corresponding methods of test for all manufactured and natural iron oxide pigments, in dry form, suitable for general use. These pigments are identified by Colour Index Nos.l) red 101 and 102, yellow 42 and 43, brown 6 and 7 and black 11, and includes "rapid-dispersion pigments". This International Standard does not cover micaceous iron oxide pigments (see Note 1), transparent iron oxide pigments, granular grey iron oxide (see Note 2) or magnetic iron oxide pigments other than those of Colour Index Pigment black 11.
