The comparison of observed graphite particles with the structures shown in the charts give only purely descriptive information on the type, distribution, and size of the graphite in the sample being evaluated. It does not indicate except in a very broad way the origin of the graphite, or the suitability of the iron-carbon alloy for a particular service. 1.1 This test method covers the classification of graphite in cast irons in terms of type, distribution, and size. This test method is intended to be applicable for all iron-carbon alloys containing graphite particles, and may be applied to gray irons, malleable irons, and the ductile (nodular) irons. 1.2 The reference standards included in this test method are in no way to be construed as specifications. In an appropriate specification for a specific material where graphite microstructure is an important consideration this test method may be used as a reference to define concisely the graphite microstructure required. 1.3 These standards are offered primarily to permit accurate reporting of microstructures of cast irons and to facilitate the comparison of reports by different laboratories or investigators. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This European Standard specifies austenitic manganese cast steels for wear-resistant service. The grades covered by this European Standard will experience maximum service life in applications where the surface of the casting is subject to impact. This European Standard retains the same format for clauses as EN 1559-1 and EN 1559-2. It shall be used in conjunction with these standards. Where no text is given under a clause heading, the corresponding clause of EN 1559-1 or EN 1559-2 applies. The structure of this standard is as follows: a) clauses and subclauses preceded by indicates no additional conditions to Part 1 or Part 2 of EN 1559; b) subclauses without any marking are mandatory.

The purpose of this part of ISO 945 is to provide information about the method of graphite classification. It is not intended to give information on the suitability of cast-iron types and grades for any particular application. The particular material grade is specified by results from tensile tests or hardness testing and, in the case of austenitic cast irons, by their chemical composition. The interpretation of graphite form and size does not allow a statistically valid statement on the fulfilment of the requirements specified in the relevant material standard. The structure of the metallic matrix (e.g. ferrite, pearlite) has a significant effect on the material properties. Such an interpretation is not the purpose of this part of ISO 945.

This standard describes 3- to 48-in. (76- to 1,219-mm) gray-iron or ductile-iron fittings to be used with ductile-iron pipe for water, wastewater, and reclaimed water. Requirements for fittings with mechanical joints and flanged joints are listed in Tables 3 through 21 at the end of this standard. This standard may also be used for fittings with push-on joints or such other joints as may be agreed on at the time of purchase. For the 3- to 24-in. (76- to 610-mm) size range, ductile-iron mechanical-joint fittings and ductile-iron push-on-joint fittings are rated for 350-psi (2,413-kPa) working pressure. Ductile-iron flange-joint fittings are rated for 250-psi (1,724-kPa) working pressure; however, 24-in. (610-mm) and smaller sizes may be rated for 350 psi (2,413 kPa) with the use of special gaskets. Gray-iron fittings having all types of joints described in this standard are rated for 150- or 250-psi (1,034- or 1,724-kPa) working pressures, as shown in the tables. For the 30- to 48-in. (762- to 1,219-mm) size range, fittings with all types of joints described in this standard are shown in the tables with rated working pressures of 150 or 250 psi (1,034 or 1,724 kPa), depending on the type of iron as shown in the tables. Fittings are adequate for the rated working pressure plus a surge allowance of 1 O0 psi or a surge allowance of half the rated working pressure, whichever is less.
