This SAE Information Report provides a comparative summary between the various messages found in the SAE ATIS standards work (notably SAE J2313, J2353, J2354, J2369 and J2374) and that found in the GATS standard (Global Automotive Telematics Standard). GATS is a message set meant to be deployed on mobile phone systems based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) phone system which is being deployed in European markets and which the SAE may need to harmonize with as part of the World Standards activities of TC204. This document provides an overview of the various types of supported messages and how they compare with US terms and messages. Some selected features of the GATS work are recommended for assimilation into the next revision of ATIS standards. No attempt at determining a U.S. policy in this regard is provided. This document seeks to provide the reader familiar with SAE ATIS with a high level overview of technical knowledge of the GATS approach in similar areas.

1 The boundaries between software and system design are not precise and there are many interrelated aspects. These Guidelines take a broad view of software, recognizing that many concerns attributed to software reliability are as much systems issues as they are related to software engineering. 2 The Guidelines make recommendations on system issues that are considered to influence software development. 3 The Guidelines are forward looking, supporting both today's developments and the vehicle features that are envisaged over the next decade. 4 The discipline of software engineering is already well supported by academia, text books and standards. This part of ISO 14230 specifies the requirements for the Keyword Protocol 2000 (KWP 2000) data link and con-nected vehicle and scan tool when used to comply with on-board diagnostic (OBD) requirements for emission-related test data. This part of ISO 14230 only specifies requirements relative to the Keyword Protocol 2000 for OBD purposes. Com-plete specification can be found in ISO 14230 parts 1 to 3 and in ISO 14229. ISO 14230-1, ISO 14230-2 and ISO 14230-3 are applicable for OBD purposes only as explicitly referenced in this part of ISO 14230.

This part of ISO 14230 specifies common requirements of diagnostic services which allow a tester to control diagnostic functions in an on-vehicle Electronic Control Unit (for example, electronic fuel injection, automatic gearbox, antilock braking system, etc.) connected on a serial data link embedded in a road vehicle. It specifies only layer 2 (data link layer). Included are all definitions which are necessary to implement the services (described in ISO 14230-3) on a serial link (described in ISO 14230-1). Also included are some communication services which are needed for communication/session management and a description of error handling. This part of ISO 14230 does not specify the requirements for the implementation of diagnostic services. The physical layer may be used as a multiuser-bus, so a kind of arbitration or bus management is necessary. There are several proposals which are not part of this part of ISO 14230. The car manufacturers are responsible for the correct working of bus management. Communication between ECUs are not part of this part of ISO 14230. The vehicle diagnostic architecture of this part of ISO 14230 applies (see figure 2) to — a single tester that may be temporarily or permanently connected to the on-vehicle diagnostic data link, and — several on-vehicle electronic control units connected directly or indirectly.

This part of ISO 14230 specifies the requirements for the Keyword Protocol 2000 data link on which one or several on-vehicle Electronic Control Units are connected to an off-board tester in order to perform diagnostic functions. This part of ISO 14230 specifies the requirements of the implementation of the Diagnostic Services specified in ISO 14229, including — byte-encoding and hexadecimal values for the service identifiers; — byte-encoding for the parameters of the diagnostic service requests and responses; — hexadecimal values for the standard parameters. The vehicle environment to which this part of ISO 14230 applies may consist of a single tester that may be temporarily connected to the on-vehicle diagnostic data link and several on-vehicle Electronic Control Units connected directly or indirectly (see figure 2).

This SAE Recommended Practice describes the implementation of enhanced diagnostic test modes, which are intended to supplement the legislated diagnostic test modes defined in SAE J1979. Modes are defined for access to emission related test data beyond what is included in SAE J1979, and for non-emission related data. This document describes the data byte values for diagnostic messages transmitted between diagnostic test equipment, either on-vehicle or off-vehicle, and vehicle electronic control modules. No distinction is made between test modes for emission related and non-emission related diagnostics. These messages can be used with a diagnostic serial data link such as described in SAE J1850 or ISO 9141-2. For each test mode, this document includes a functional description of the test mode, request and report message data byte content, and an example if useful for clarification.
