1.1 This practice applies to the blending of automotive spark-ignition engine fuels with ethanol concentrations greater than those suitable for conventional-fuel vehicles and less than the minimum ethanol content specification limits of Specification D5798.1.2 These mid-level ethanol fuel blends are only suitable for use in ground flexible-fuel vehicles equipped with sparkignition engines. Flexible-fuel vehicles are designed to operate on gasoline or gasoline-ethanol blends that meet the requirements of Specification D4814, ethanol fuel blends that meet the requirements of Specification D5798, or any combination of these. In the United States, these vehicles are certified by the U.S. EPA as emissions compliant with these types of fuels.1.3 The mid-level ethanol fuel blend shall be blended from either:1.3.1 Denatured fuel ethanol conforming to the requirements of Specification D4806 with a reduced limit on inorganic chloride content that will ensure no more than 1 mg/kg inorganic chloride in the finished fuel and from spark-ignition engine fuel conforming to Specification D4814 (often at a distribution terminal or bulk plant), or1.3.2 Ethanol fuel blends conforming to Specification D5798 and from spark-ignition engine fuel conforming to Specification D4814 (often at a retail site).1.4 This practice describes the required procedures for blending various mid-level ethanol fuel blends for flexible-fuel vehicles at the bulk distribution point or retail/commercial delivery site. These requirements may be applied at other points in the production and distribution system when provided by agreement between the purchaser and the supplier.1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This standard is intended to provide a method to obtain repeatable measurements that accurately reflect true engine performance in customer service. Whenever there is an opportunity for interpretation of the standard, a good faith effort shall be made to obtain the engine's typical in-service performance and avoid finding the best possible performance under the best possible conditions. Intentional biasing of engine component or assembly tolerance to optimize performance for this test is prohibited. This SAE Standard has been adopted by SAE to specify: a. A basis for net engine power rating as installed in the final application; b. Reference inlet air and fuel supply test conditions; c. A method for correcting observed power to reference conditions; d. A method for determining net full load engine power with a dynamometer; and e. A procedure to ensure that engine controls are operating in a manner consistent with customer operation.

This SAE Recommended Practice is applicable to all types of reciprocating engines including two-stroke cycle and free piston engines, and was prepared to facilitate clear understanding and promote uniformity in nomenclature. This test method is designed to simulate the synergistic combinations of oil flow, temperature cycling, hot spots, and tribology that would typically be found in a gas turbine engine. The method is intended to quantitatively characterize changes in four basic oil properties that are brought about by exposure to the afore mentioned simulated turbine engine environment: the tendency of aviation lubricants to form coke deposits, viscosity changes, total acid number changes (TAN), and oil consumption.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes guidelines for the operation of automotive keyless ignition systems with the goal of helping to minimize user instigated errors. For the purpose of this Recommended Practice, user instigated errors may include: the inability to start and stop the vehicle propulsion system; exiting the vehicle with the automatic transmission in a non-parking gear; exiting the vehicle while the vehicle propulsion system is enabled; exiting the vehicle while the vehicle propulsion system is disabled, but the accessory or electrical systems are active. To help minimize these errors, this Recommended Practice contains design recommendations pertaining to uniform labeling, operating logic, indication of vehicle ignition/control status, and physical control characteristics of keyless ignition systems. This Recommended Practice applies to keyless ignition controls permanently mounted in passenger cars, MPVs, and trucks 10 000 GVWR and under. It does not apply to remote start/remote stop systems that provide remote controls to start or stop a vehicle engine from outside the vehicle.

This document covers the mechanisms from the power cylinder which contribute to the mechanical friction of an internal combustion engine. It will not discuss in detail the influence of other engine components or engine driven accessories on friction. In internal combustion engines, the ability of an engine to generate its power potential to its fullest is hindered by the inherent internal friction of the sliding components and the friction of the engine driven accessories. In an era where power and fuel economy are key performance attributes, any operating condition which hinders the ability of an engine to achieve these attributes is of primary interest to the engine designer. Any sliding surface in the engine contributes to the friction of an engine. According to Taylor, (Reference a), the friction of an internal combustion engine is partitioned between the piston and ring assembly and the bearing, valve, and gear trains with the piston assembly accounting for 75% of the friction. Since the power cylinder friction is a major contributor to the over-all mechanical friction of the engine, any friction reduction goes directly to brake power with no increase in emissions, will add thermal efficiency at no cost to the customer, and can potentially improve durability. Any attempt to minimize the friction of an engine logically starts with decreasing the friction of the piston assembly. This document focuses on the friction of the piston and ring assembly sliding in a lubricated bore, in an attempt to communicate the current best thinking on the subject of power cylinder friction. With this understanding, the engine designer or engine development engineer will be able to minimize the friction of the power cylinder assembly thereby contributing to the power output or fuel economy of an internal combustion engine.
