This specification covers the requirements for ethylene glycol or propylene glycol base engine coolants used in automobiles or other light duty service cooling systems. When concentrates are used at 40 to 70 % concentration by volume in water, or when prediluted glycol base engine coolants (50 volume % minimum) are used without further dilution, they will function effectively to provide protection against freezing, boiling, and corrosion. The coolants governed by this specification are categorized as follows: Note 1 -This specification is based on the knowledge of the performance of engine coolants prepared from new or virgin ingredients. This specification shall also apply to engine coolants prepared using glycol generated from recycled or reprocessed used coolant or reprocessed industrial-source glycol, provided that said glycol meets the requirements of Specification E 1177. Separate specifications (D 6471 and D 6472) exist for engine coolants prepared from recycled or reprocessed used coolant or reprocessed industrial-source glycol that does not meet the requirements established in Specification E 1177. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. The objective of this report is to provide information that may be used in obtaining an average power per duty cycle for truck and bus engine accessories. The accessory components covered by this information report include: air brake compressors, alternators, air conditioning compressors, engine cooling fans and drives, and power steering pumps. The values show an estimate of the average power requirements of known duty cycles of these engine drive accessories. This report does not address loads required for engine operation. Required systems include those needed for engine performance such as fuel pumps and electronic control modules (ECM).

This SAE Information Report is a source of information concerning the basic properties of engine coolants which are satisfactory for use in internal combustion engines. Engine coolant concentrate (antifreeze) must provide adequate corrosion protection, lower the freezing point, and raise the boiling point of the engine coolant. For additional information on engine coolants see ASTM D 3306, ASTM D 5216, ASTM D 4985, and ASTM D 6211. The values presented describe desirable basic properties. The results from laboratory tests are not conclusive, and it should be recognized that the final selection of satisfactory coolants can be proven only after a series of performance tests in vehicles. The main body of this document also describes in general the necessary maintenance procedures for all engine coolants to insure proper performance. In addition, special requirements for coolants for heavy-duty engines are covered in Appendix A. This document does not cover maintenance of engine cooling system component parts. That topic is discussed in detail in SAE HS 40.

This specification covers the requirements for a recycled prediluted aqueous ethylene glycol (50 volume % minimum) base engine coolant and recycled prediluted aqueous propylene glycol (50 volume % minimum) base engine coolant for use in automobiles and light-duty vehicles. Committee D15 has developed this specification using experience, knowledge and research from recycling used aqueous base engine coolant and blends of used aqueous base engine coolant and virgin glycol. This standard does not apply to coolant produced from other glycol sources such as medical waste, distillation bottoms, airplane/airport deicers and polyester production waste. This specification provides a procedure for evaluating engine coolant recycling technologies through the recycling of a reference synthetic used engine coolant. It also specifies the chemical, physical, and performance requirements for the recycled prediluted aqueous glycol base engine coolant that is produced from that procedure. When used without further dilution, this product functions effectively during both winter and summer. This material is intended to provide protection against freezing, boiling, and corrosion in automobile or other light-duty service cooling systems. These remanufacturing procedures are recommended minimum guidelines for use by remanufactures of light-duty automotive starters to promote consistent reliability, durability, and safety of remanufactured starters. Installation of remanufactured or rebuilt products is often an economical way to repair a vehicle even though the products may not be identical to original equipment parts. Before processing any part, a remanufacturer should determine if the original design and present condition of the core are suitable for remanufacturing so as to provide durable operation of the part as well as acceptable performance when installed on the vehicle. The remanufacturer should also consider the safety aspects of the product and any recommendations of the original manufacturers related to remanufacturing or rebuilding their product. While these PROCEDURES are meant to be universal in application, various product types have unique features of dimension and design which may require special remanufacturing processes and tests that are either not covered by or are exceptions to these PROCEDURES.
