The SAE Guide to APU health management establishes the foundation for developing a successful APU health management program at any aircraft or APU operator, such as an airline, an OEM, an equipment supplier, or a military transport unit. This guide identifies the best practices for using an APU health management program to improve dispatch reliability and to satisfy Extended Operations (ETOPS) availability requirements. There have been many attempts to institute APU health management programs but most programs were modeled after the pre-existing main engine programs. These models often overlooked special considerations that are necessary to make an APU health management program successful. This report will identify the unique characteristics of a successful APU health management program and the best practices for establishing a system. The purpose of this report is to guide the development and use of a successful APU health management effort in a practical, cost effective method. This report will: Identify the costs and benefits associated with developing an effective APU health management program; Identify the best practices and technologies for developing and implementing an APU health management program; Identify the best practices for using APU health management to prevent failures and disruptions to operations; Identify a recommended collection of data, including recommended measurements and recommended events.

This paper describes a recommended practice and procedure for the correlation of test cells that are used for the performance testing of turboprop and turboshaft engines. This Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) shall apply to both dynamometer and propeller based testing. Test cell correlation is performed to determine the effect of any given test cell enclosure and equipment on the performance of an engine relative to the baseline performance of that engine.

This Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides a method for digital computer programs for gas turbine engine, steady-state or transient, performance to be written using the FORTRAN 77 Language. When it is agreed between the program User and Supplier that a particular program will be supplied in FORTRAN 77, it is recommended that this ARP be used in conjunction with AS681 for steady-state and transient programs. This ARP has two purposes: 1. to remove the requirement for HOLLERITH stores by replacing them with FORTRAN 77 CHARACTER stores; and 2. to take advantage of the FORTRAN 77 CHARACTER storage to extend the information interface between the calling program and the engine subroutine. The ARP has the same major section numbers as AS 681 to facilitate its use with these documents. The information given in each section of this ARP is additional to that given in AS 681.

The turbine-engine inlet flow distortion methodology addressed in this document applies only to the effects of inlet total-pressure distortion. Practices employed to quantify these effects are developing and therefore, periodic updates are anticipated. The effects of other forms of distortion on flow stability and performance and of any distortion on aeroelastic stability are not addressed. The guidelines can be used as necessary to create a development method to minimize the risk of inlet/engine compatibility problems. The degree to which guidelines for descriptor use, assessment techniques, and testing outlined in this document are applied to a specific program should be consistent with the expected severity of the compatibility problem. This Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides guidelines by which gas turbine engine aerodynamic stability and performance, as affected by the quality of the airflow delivered to the engine, can be evaluated consistently. The following subjects are addressed: distortion descriptors: distortion descriptors are presented that permit the representation and evaluation of inlet total-pressure distortion effects on propulsion system stability and performance. Stability assessment: guidelines are presented for developing an evaluation method that relates the distortion descriptor levels to engine stability in a form suitable for use in computer simulations. Testing: guidelines are provided for testing, instrumentation, data acquisition, and data processing.
