Scope
This standard gives the coding specification of the system layer. It is primarily designed to support the combination of video and audio encoding methods defined in Parts 2 and 3 of this series of standards. The system layer supports the following five basic functions: 1) Synchronization of multiple compressed streams during decoding; 2) Interleaving of multiple compressed streams into a single stream; 3) Initialization of buffers to start decoding; 4) Continuous buffers management; 5) time stamp. A multiplexed bit stream in this standard may be a Transport Stream or a Program Stream. Both streams consist of PES packets or packets containing other necessary information. Both stream types support compositing from video and audio compressed streams with a common time base program. Transport Streams also support the compositing of video and audio compressed streams from multiple programs with independent time bases. Program streams are generally more suitable for environments where few errors occur and support software processing of program information. Transport streams are better suited for environments where errors can occur. Whether it is a transport stream or a program stream, the multi-channel composite bit stream in this standard has two layers: the outermost layer is the system layer, and the innermost layer is the compression layer. The system layer provides the functionality necessary to use one or more streams of compressed data in the system. The audio and video sections of this series of specifications define the compression coding layers for audio and video data. Definitions for encoding of other types of data are not included in this standard, but shall be supported by the system layer if they conform to the constraints defined in 2.7.
