This part specifies the structure, services and protocols of the COSEM application layer for COSEM clients and servers. This standard specifies the data communication services referenced by logical name (LN) and short name (SN) using COSEM interface objects. A COSEM server may use both LN references and SN references in a given connection: this requires negotiation when the application connection is established. COSEM client usually uses LN connection, if the client communicates with server using SN reference, LN service should be mapped to SN service. Appendix C gives examples of APDU encoding, and Appendix D explains the role of data models and protocols in meter data exchange.
