- Scope
- This standard is a guide which gives general recommendations for zinc or aluminum corrosion-resistant protective coatings for steel structural members, including connections. This standard focuses on hot-dip coatings and thermal spray coatings on hot-rolled or cold-formed steel, but these general recommendations are also applicable to other zinc coatings (electrogalvanized, mechanically galvanized, powder sherardized, etc.). Preliminary protection involves: a) appropriate standard process; b) design requirements; c) use environment. These guidelines also consider the impact of the initial choice of aluminum or zinc cladding on subsequent application of paint or powder coating. These guidelines provide general advice only and do not deal with in-service maintenance of steel with zinc or aluminum coatings against corrosion, which is given in a separate document (see ISO 12944-5). The specific requirements of each type of metal coating have prompted the development of their respective standards. Requirements for metal cladding applied on a particular product in a factory and becoming an integral part of that product (eg nails, fasteners, ductile iron pipes) are specified by the corresponding product standard.
