Scope

This International Standard specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety management system designed to enable an organization to control its occupational health and safety risks and improve its occupational health and safety performance. It neither prescribes specific OH&S performance criteria nor provides detailed management system design specifications. This International Standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to: a) establish an OH&S management system to eliminate or minimize risks to employees and other interested parties who may be exposed to OH&S hazards associated with the organization's activities b) implement, maintain and continuously improve the OH&S management system; c) ensure that the organization itself complies with its stated OH&S policy; d) demonstrate conformity to this International Standard by: 1) making self-assessments and self-declarations ; 2) Seek confirmation of its conformity from a party with an interest in the organization (such as customers, etc.); 3) Seek confirmation of its self-declaration from an external party; 4) Seek certification from an external organization of its occupational health and safety management system . All requirements in this International Standard are intended to be incorporated into any OH&S management system. The degree of its application depends on the organization's occupational health and safety policy, the nature of the activity, the risk and complexity of the operation and other factors. This standard is intended to address occupational health and safety, not other aspects of health and safety such as employee fitness or wellness programs, product safety, property damage, or environmental impact.
