This International Standard applies to insulator strings and sets comprising string insulator units of ceramic material, glass or composite material for use on a.c. overhead lines and traction lines with a nominal voltage above 1 000 V and a frequency between 15 Hz and 100 Hz. This standard also applies to insulator strings or sets of similar design used in substations. This standard establishes a standard test procedure for power arc tests on insulator sets. It also establishes a standard test procedure for power arc tests on short strings. This standard does not apply to insulator sets mounted on non-metallic poles or towers. This standard cannot be directly applied to line post insulators or sets, or to insulating structures such as braced line-posts, since their mounting arrangement cannot be reproduced by the standard arrangements as described herein. However, this standard can be used as a basis for agreement for tests on such insulators and arrangements. The object of this standard is – to define the terms used, – to prescribe a standard test procedure, – to prescribe criteria to evaluate the results of the tests. Power arc tests are not an obligatory element of line insulator specifications. The standard test procedures and the evaluation criteria described in this standard are intended to provide testing guidance when power arc tests are felt to be necessary. It is not the object of this standard to introduce a general obligation to execute these tests.

This International Standard specifies the procedure for a radio interference (RI) test carried out in a laboratory on clean and dry insulators at a frequency of 0,5 MHz or 1 MHz or, alternatively, at other frequencies between 0,5 MHz and 2 MHz. In service the RI characteristics of an insulator may be modified by the ambient conditions, particularly rainfall and other moisture, and by pollution. It is not considered feasible to specify reproducible test conditions to simulate a range of ambient conditions. Hence only tests on clean and dry insulators are specified in this standard. NOTE – The effects of insulator surface conditions, including pollution, are presented in Amendment 1 of CISPR 18-2.

This technical report is applicable to the determination of the withstand characteristics of ceramic and glass insulators to be used outdoors and exposed to polluted atmospheres, on d.c. systems with voltages from ±1 000 V up to ±600 kV. These tests are not directly applicable to insulators made of organic materials, to composite insulators, to greased insulators or to special types of insulators (insulators with semiconductive glaze or covered with any organic insulating material). This report presents procedures for artificial pollution tests applicable to d.c. overhead-line insulators, substation insulators and traction line insulators. It may also be applied to bushings with suitable precautions to avoid internal damage and to hollow insulators intended for use in other apparatus. In applying these procedures to apparatus incorporating hollow insulators, the relevant technical committees should consider their effect on the internal equipment and the special precautions which may be necessary. NOTE - For largest objects such as large wall bushings and transducers, a high spread of test results has been experienced.

This part of IEC 383 applies to insulator strings and insulator sets comprising string insulator units of ceramic material . or glass for use on a.c. overhead power lines with a nominal voltage greater than 1 000 V and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz. This part of IEC 383 also applies to insulator strings and insulator sets for use on d.c. overhead electric traction lines. This part of IEC 383 also applies to insulator strings and insulator sets of similar design when used in substations. It may be regarded as a provisional standard for insulator strings and insulator sets for use on d.c. overhead power lines and for composite insulator sets. The object of this part of IEC 383 is to prescribe standard electrical test procedures and acceptance criteria to verify the defined characteristics of insulator strings and insulator sets falling within the scope of the part of IEC 383. These tests and characteristics are intended to give a common base to designers, users and suppliers of overhead lines, insulators and line equipment when definition, evaluation or verification of the electrical characteristics of such equipment is required. These tests are not intended to be mandatory tests on insulators whether supplied individually or as strings or as sets. NOTES 1 Tests on string insulator units are dealt with in IEC 383-1. Tests on composite insulators are dealt with in IEC 1109. 2 This part does not include artificial pollution or radio-interference tests. These subjects and relevant test methods are dealt with in the following IEC reports: IEC 437: Report — radio interference test on high-voltage insulators. IEC 507: Report — artificial pollution tests on high-voltage insulators to be used on a.c. systems. 3 Power arc tests are currently under study.

This International Standard is applicable to string insulator units of ceramic material or glass for use on d.c. overhead power lines with a nominal voltage greater than 1 000 V. It is not applicable to composite insulators. The application of this standard to insulators for use in other situations under d.c. voltage will be left to the relevant technical committees. This standard specifies: - the characteristics of insulators; - the conditions under which the specified values of these characteristics shall be verified; - acceptance criteria. It specifies basic characteristic tests in a manner similar to that of IEC 383-1. Certain additional tests have been found to be necessary to ensure satisfactory long-term performance of d.c. insulators. At present, these additional tests concern only cap and pin insulators. In view of the lack of significant performance data regarding long rod insulators on d.c. lines, it is not possible at present to define or validate special d.c.-oriented tests for such insulators. This standard does not include requirements, or special tests, dealing with the choice of insulators for specific operating conditions (e.g. ageing arising from specific operating conditions). NOTES 1 This standard does not include radio interference tests, artificial pollution tests or tests on insulator sets. These subjects and some relevant test methods are dealt with in the following IEC Publications: IEC 383-2, IEC 437 and IEC 1245. 2 Many of the requirements and tests in this standard are relevant to insulators for use on d.c. traction lines, but other tests may be required. Reference can be made to IEC 383-1.

This International Standard IEC 60168 is applicable to post insulators and post insulator units of ceramic material or glass, for indoor and outdoor use in electrical installations or equipment, operating on alternating current with a nominal voltage greater than 1 000 V and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz. This standard may be regarded as a provisional standard for post insulators for use on d.c. systems. IEC 60438 gives general guidance for those insulators. This standard does not apply to composite insulators, or to those indoor post insulators in organic material which are covered by another IEC standard [1]*. The object of this standard is to define: – the terms used; – the electrical and mechanical characteristics of post insulators; – the conditions under which the specified values of these characteristics are verified; – the methods of test; – the acceptance criteria. Numerical values of characteristics of post insulators are specified in IEC 60273. This standard does not include requirements dealing with the choice of post insulators for specific operating conditions. NOTE 1 A guide for the choice of insulators under polluted conditions is available, see [2]. NOTE 2 This standard does not include radio interference tests or artificial pollution tests. These subjects and relevant test methods are dealt with in other IEC publications, see [3], [4] and [5]. NOTE 3 When this standard is applied to hollow post insulators, other IEC publications should also be taken into account, see [6] and [7].

The methods described in this technical specification can be used for the measurement of the wettability of the shed and housing material of composite insulators for overhead lines, substations and equipment or ceramic insulators covered or not covered by a coating. The obtained value represents the wettability at the time of the measurement. The object of this standard is to describe three methods that can be used to determine the wettability of insulators. The determination of the ability of water to wet the surface of insulators may be useful to evaluate the condition of the surface of insulators in service, or as part of the insulator testing in the laboratory

This International Standard deals with impulse puncture testing in air of ceramic and glass insulator units of class B (see IEC 60383-1): cap and pin, pin type (including pin-post type) and class B long rod insulators. This standard may be applied also in tests on Class B insulators of other materials (e.g. polymers and composites). However, it may be useful to consider the possible need to adjust the test procedure accordingly. This standard is published with the object of specifying a standard procedure for impulse voltage puncture tests on insulators in air. Both type and sample test procedures are given

This part of IEC 383 applies to insulators of ceramic material or glass for use on a.c. overhead power lines and overhead traction lines with a nominal voltage greater than 1 000 V and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz. It also applies to insulators for use on d.c. overhead electric traction lines. This part applies to string insulator units, rigid overhead line insulators and to insulators of similar design when used in substations. It does not apply to insulators forming pa rts of electrical apparatus or to pa rts used in their construction or to post insulators which are covered by IEC 168: Tests on indoor and outdoor post insulators of ceramic material or glass for systems with nominal voltages greater than 1 000 V. It may be regarded as a provisional standard for insulators for use on d.c. overhead power lines. IEC 438: Tests and dimensions for high-voltage d.c. insulators, gives general guidance for those insulators. NOTE - An international standard dealing with tests on insulators for d.c. overhead lines is in preparation and is intended to replace the relevant clauses of IEC 438. Tests on insulator strings and insulator sets (for example, wet switching impulse voltage) are dealt with in part 2 of IEC 383. NOTES 1 This part does not include artificial pollution tests, radio-interference tests or residual strength tests. These subjects and relevant test methods are dealt with in the following IEC repo rts: IEC 437: Radio interference test on high-voltage insulators IEC 507: Artificial pollution tests on high-voltage insulators to be used on a.c. systems IEC 797: Residual strength of string insulator units of glass or ceramic material for overhead lines after mechanical damage of the dielectric. 2 The term "ceramic material" is used in this part to refer to porcelain materials and, contrary to North American practice, does not include glasses.

This International Standard is applicable to post insulators of organic material for indoor service in electrical installations or equipment operating in air at atmospheric pressure on alternating current with a nominal voltage greater than 1 000 V up to, but not including, 300 kV, as defined by range I of IEC 60071-1, and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz. Composite insulators are not covered by this standard. The object of this standard is – to define the terms used; – to define electrical and mechanical characteristics of post insulators of organic material and to prescribe the conditions under which the specified values of these characteristics are verified; – to prescribe methods of testing; – to prescribe acceptance criteria. This standard does not give numerical values for insulator characteristics; nor does it deal with a choice of insulators for specific operating conditions. IEC 60273 specifies numerical values for electrical and mechanical characteristics and gives the dimensions necessary for interchangeability of post insulators.

IEC/TS 62371:2008(E) is a Technical Specification which applies to ceramic and glass hollow insulators intended for general use in electrical equipment; and ceramic hollow insulators intended for use with a permanent gas pressure in switchgear and controlgear. This specification specifies the dimensional and mechanical characteristics of the hollow insulator, which are essential for interchangeability of the hollow insulator of the same type. It is not the object of this specification to prescribe electrical characteristics because they are dependent on the apparatus of which the hollow insulator ultimately forms a part. However, standard lightning impulse withstand voltage which is provided in IEC 60071-1 is described only for reference for classification purpose. This specification applies to hollow insulators for use in electrical equipment in clean areas or lightly polluted areas, where seismic qualification is not required.
