In the early 1970's the only fluxes permissible for electronics manufacturing for military applications were types R (pure rosin only) and RMA (rosin based, mildly activated). Before any of these fluxes could be approved and established on the military "qualified products list", it was necessary to demonstrate that were non-corrosive and did not contain ionic halides in of established critical levels. All fluxes were required to pass a silver chromate paper test which sensitively indicates presence of halide ions.

The purpose of this test is to determine the susceptibility of non-noble metal contact interfaces to the phenomena of fretting corrosion. Fretting corrosion is an accelerated oxidation of contact surfaces brought about by smallamplitude cyclic relative motions between mating contacts. In this test,.a driving motion is imposed which tends to cause relative motion at the contact surfaces. From contact resistance measurements, one determines whether the resulting contact motion, if any, generates significant or detrimental films in the contact interface.

The purpose of this test method is to provide a consistent procedure to test the sensitivity of electronic components to ultrasonic energy. There has been a reluctance in the electronics industty to use ultrasonic energy for printed board assemblies cleaning because of the possibility of damage to wire bonds in active, hermetically sealed components or other damage that might cause latent failures. Recent work has shown that electronic components have a low potential for damage from ultrasonics (See 6.1) under conditions seen in most cleaning processes. In addition, MILSTD- 2000 Rev. A and J-STD O01 nbw allow for the use of ultrasonic cleaning, as does the proposal for IEC TC91 International Standards based on an updated revision of the J-STD-001
