This document specifies the requirements for compatibility and connectability assessment of system components that either comply with the requirements of EN 54 or with a manufacturer's specification where there is no EN 54 standard. This document only includes system requirements when these are necessary for compatibility assessment. This document also specifies requirements for the integrity of the fire detection and fire alarm system when connected to other systems. This document does not specify the manner in which the system is designed, installed and used in any particular application. This document recognizes that it is not practical to assess the compatibility or connectability of components in all possible configurations. Methods of assessment are specified to reach an acceptable degree of confidence within pre-determined operational and environmental conditions. This document specifies requirements related to compatibility and connectability assessment methods and tests for the system components. This document is applicable to systems where the components are connected to control and indicating equipment and where the components are interconnected by electrical wires. For fire detection and fire alarm systems that use other means of interconnection (for example optical fibre or radio frequency links), this document may be used as guidance. NOTE Other European Standards are expected to cover the requirements of the other systems to which the fire detection and fire alarm system may be connected.

This part of BS 5446 specifies requirements and test methods for kits and their components intended to be assembled to create smoke alarm systems for deaf and hard of hearing people, for the purpose of life safety in dwellings. It also specifies requirements and test methods for such smoke alarm kits intended for use in leisure accommodation vehicles (LAVs). NOTE 1 Although this part of BS 5446 provides the specification for smoke alarm kits for dwellings, it is recognized that these kits, or components thereof, might be used in other situations, where similar requirements could be anticipated. This part of BS 5446 does not cover: —the use of stand-alone smoke alarms; —extensions or modifications to existing installations; —outdoor use of any component of a kit. NOTE 2 Equipment conforming to this part of BS 5446 might not be suitable for use in boats, due to the corrosive atmosphere. This part of BS 5446 does not cover medical vibrating devices as defined in BS EN ISO 9999; these are covered by BS EN 12182.

This part of ISO 7240 specifies the requirements for compatibility and connectability assessment of system components that either comply with the requirements of ISO 7240 or with a manufacturer's specification where there is no ISO 7240 International Standard. This part of ISO 7240 includes only system requirements when these are necessary for compatibility assessment. This part of ISO 7240 also specifies requirements for the integrity of the fire detection and fire alarm system when connected to other systems. This part of ISO 7240 does not specify the manner in which the system is designed, installed and used in any particular application. This part of ISO 7240 is applicable to systems where the components are connected to control-and-indicating equipment (c.i.e.) and where the components are interconnected by electrical wires. For fire detection and fire alarm systems using other means of interconnection (for example optical fibre or radio frequency links), this part of ISO 7240 may be used as guidance. NOTE Other International Standards are expected to cover the requirements of the other systems to which the fire detection and fire alarm system may be connected.

This part of BS 5839 gives recommendations for the planning, design and installation of fire detection and fire alarm systems in dwellings and dwelling units that are designed to accommodate a single family, and in houses in multiple occupation that comprise a number of self-contained units each designed to accommodate a single family. The recommendations apply to both new dwellings and existing dwellings. Recommendations for routine attention are also given. The systems covered in this part of BS 5839 range from those comprising a single self-contained smoke alarm to systems of the type described in BS 5839-1. The recommendations of this part of BS 5839 may also be applied to the fire detection components of combined domestic fire and intruder alarm systems or fire and social alarm systems. This part of BS 5839 applies to forms of dwelling including bungalows, multi-storey houses, individual flats and maisonettes, mobile homes, sheltered houses, housing providing NHS supported living in the community (as defined in Health Technical Memorandum 88 [1]), mansions, and houses divided into several self-contained single-family dwelling units. It does not apply to hostels, caravans or boats (other than permanently moored boats used solely as residential premises), or to the communal parts of purpose-built sheltered housing and blocks of flats or maisonettes. It does not apply to any premises used for purposes other than as a dwelling (e.g. small shops, factories or similar premises used solely as places of work). This part of BS 5839 is intended for use by architects and other building professionals, enforcing authorities, contractors and others responsible for implementing fire precautions in dwellings. It is not intended for occupiers, for whom advice is published by the Government. However, recommendations are given for simple systems that may be installed by non-specialists. The recommendations refer principally to fire detection and fire alarm systems installed for the purpose of life safety. However, recommendations are given for systems that are also intended to protect property. note:1) The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (in England and Wales), the Scottish Executive and the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (Northern Ireland).

ISO 7240-15:2004 specifies requirements, test methods and performance criteria for point-type resettable multisensor fire detectors for use in fire detection systems installed in buildings, incorporating in one mechanical enclosure at least one smoke sensor and at least one other sensor which responds to heat, and in which the signal(s) of the smoke sensor(s) is/are combined with the signal(s) of the heat sensor(s). The performance of single components within a multisensor fire detector covered by this standard may not be sufficient for conformity to other standards for the single sensor.

This document provides guidelines for the application of automatic fire detection and fire alarm systems in and around buildings. The Technical Specification covers planning, design, installation, commissioning, use and maintenance of the systems. The guidelines cover systems intended for the protection of life and/or the protection of property. The guidelines cover systems with at least one fire detector. The systems may be capable of providing signals to initiate, in the event of a fire, the operation of ancillary equipment (such as fixed fire extinguishing systems) and other precautions and actions (such as machinery shutdown), but the guidelines do not cover the ancillary services themselves. The guidelines do not cover systems combining fire alarm functions with other non-fire related functions. The guidelines do not recommend whether or not an automatic fire detection and/or fire alarm system should be installed in any given premises. It has been assumed in the drafting of this Part of EN 54 that the execution of its provisions will been trusted to appropriately competent persons. However, guidance is also given to other persons purchasing or using a fire detection or fire alarm system.

1.1 These requirements cover alarm valves for use in automatic wet-pipe sprinkler systems for fire-protection service. Alarm valves covered by these requirements are of either the variable- or constant-pressure type and are of the swing-check pattern. Ordinarily, variable-pressure alarm valves are acceptable for constant-pressure service without alteration; however, in some designs, that part of the device having to do with the delaying of alarms may be omitted. 1.2 Alarm valves covered by these requirements include the sizes 1 – 12 inches, inclusive. 1.3 Alarm valves covered by these requirements are intended for installation and use in accordance with the Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13.

This International Standard specifies requirements, test methods, performance criteria, and manufacturer's instructions for smoke alarms that operate using scattered light, transmitted light, or ionization, and are intended for household or similar residential applications. For the testing of other types of smoke alarms, or smoke alarms working on different principles, this International Standard should be used only for guidance. Smoke alarms with special characteristics and developed for specific risks are not covered by this International Standard. This International Standard allows, although it does not require, the inclusion within the smoke alarm of facilities for the following: — visual fault condition indication; — extended temperature-range operation; — interconnection with other similar smoke alarms and/or accessories; — alarm-silencing facility. Where such facilities are included, this International Standard specifies applicable requirements. This International Standard does not cover devices intended for incorporation in systems using separate control and indicating equipment. Certain types of smoke alarms contain radioactive materials. The national requirements for radiation protection differ from country to country and they are not specified in this International Standard. Such smoke alarms should, however, comply with the applicable national standards, which should be in line with the recommendations of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
