This International Standard describes a glow discharge optical emission spectrometric (GD-OES) method for the determination of the thickness, mass per unit area and chemical composition of surface layer films. It is limited to a description of general procedures of quantification of GD-OES and is not applicable directly for the quantification of individual materials having various thicknesses and elements to be determined. NOTE Any individual standard for a test material will have to specify a scope of a thickness of the surface layer as well as analyte elements, and include results of interlaboratory tests for validation of the methods.

This European Standard specifies procedures for the chemical analysis of aggregates. It specifies the reference procedures and, in certain cases, an alternative method which can be considered as giving equivalent results. Unless otherwise stated, the test methods specified in this standard may be used for factory production control, for audit tests or for type tests. This standard describes the reference methods used for type testing and in cases of dispute (and alternatives methods) for chemical analyses of aggregates. For the purpose of type testing and in cases of dispute only the reference method should be used. For other purposes, in particular factory production control, other methods may be used provided that an appropriate working relationship with the reference method has been established.

1.1 This Standard specifies general requirements in accordance with which a reference material producer has to demonstrate that it operates, if it is to be recognized as competent to carry out the production of reference materials. 1.2 This Standard is intended for the use by reference material producers in the development and implementation of their management system for quality, administrative and technical operations. Reference material customers, regulatory authorities and accreditation bodies may also use it in confirming and recognizing the competence of reference material producers. 1.3 This Standard sets out the management system requirements in accordance with which reference materials shall be produced. It is intended to be used as part of a reference material producer's general quality assurance (QA) procedures. 1.4 This Standard covers the production of certified and non-certified reference materials. For non-certified reference materials, the production requirements are less stringent than for certified reference materials. The minimum requirements for the production of non-certified reference materials are specified throughout the Standard.
