This part of ISO 1431 specifies procedures intended for use in estimating the resistance of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubbers to cracking when exposed, under static or dynamic tensile strain, to air containing a definite concentration of ozone and at a definite temperature in circumstances that exclude the effects of direct light. Great caution is necessary in attempting to relate standard test results to service performance since the relative ozone resistance of different rubbers can vary markedly depending on the conditions, especially ozone concentration and temperature. In addition, tests are carried out on thin test pieces deformed in tension and the significance of attack for articles in service can be quite different owing to the effects of size and of the type and magnitude of the deformation. Explanatory notes on the nature of ozone cracking are given in Annex A. Reference and alternative methods for determining the ozone concentration are described in ISO 1431-3.

This International Standard specifies a test based on hardness measurements for determining the progressive stiffening of rubber with time, caused by crystallization. It is limited to materials having an initial hardness at a test temperature of from 10 IRHD to 85 IRHD. The method is applicable to raw, unvulcanized (compounded) and vulcanized rubber. It is mainly of interest for rubber with a marked crystallization tendency at temperatures experienced in cold climates, such as chloroprene and natural rubber. The method is not applicable to fast-crystallizing materials which crystallize to a considerable degree within the time-span of 15 min used for conditioning at test temperature.

The scope of this document is to define a test method for performing the Compression Stress Relaxation (CSR) Test with the Automotive Standard (ASD) CSR Jig using the appropriate test fixtures, configurations and procedures. This standard defines the equipment needed, guidelines for running the test, and the format for generating the results and analyzing the data. This document describes test procedures and conditions for determining the loss in counter-force of a 12.7 mm (0.500 in) diameter button compressed in an ASD CSR Jig at a constant deformation, measured at room temperature at periodic intervals, after exposure to elevated temperatures and/or fluids. It is designed for testing of vulcanized rubber and thermoplastic elastomers with an instantaneous Type A Hardness from 45 to 90 (ASTM D2240). Samples are molded and cured in accordance with ASTM D3182. This document is specific to the use of the ASD CSR jig, a required apparatus list, a specific test method including a quality check for the total system. This document was developed based on testing new and aged specimens. This method can involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This method does not propose to address all the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of user of this method to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the nitrogen surface area (NSA) of carbon blacks and other rubber compounding ingredients, like silicas and zinc oxides, based on the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) theory of gas adsorption using a multipoint determination. This test method specifies the sample preparation and treatment, instrument calibration, required accuracy and precision of the experimental data, and calculation of the surface area results from the data obtained. Also given is a procedure for calculating the statistical thickness surface area (STSA), otherwise known as the external surface area. The test method specified uses an automatic static-volume vacuum apparatus, the surface area being calculated using the BET theory based on monolayer measurements. The automatic instruments described in these standards perform all the necessary computations, including that of the surface area based on statistical thickness. However, the automatic point-setting procedures used are not applicable to the STSA method. NOTE Automatic instruments based on continuous flow using mixtures of nitrogen and helium gas in various ratios are also available. As good as they are, it is highly desirable to verify their accuracy of measurement against results obtained from vacuum-type instruments.
