This part of EN 746 together with EN 746-1 specifies safety requirements for single and multiple burners that are part of Industrial Thermoprocessing Equipment. (In this standard referred to as IThE). This document deals with significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to combustion and fuel handling systems that are part of IThE as listed in Clause 4, when used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer. This European Standard covers:  fuel pipework downstream of and including the manual isolating valve;  burner(s), burner system and ignition device;  safety related control system (protective system). This European Standard applies to any oxidation with air or other gases containing free oxygen of gaseous, liquid and solid fuels or any combustion of them to release thermal energy. For thermal or catalytic post combustion and waste incineration, this European Standard applies only to auxiliary burners designed to start-up and/or support the process. The pressure hazard of the piping and components covered by this standard is within the limits of maximum pressure/size relationship as described in normative Annex E. This European Standard also gives the necessary requirements for the information for use. This European Standard does not cover hazards from heating generated by electricity. This European Standard does not deal with the hazards created by the release of flammable substances from the products processed in the IThE. This European Standard is not applicable to combustion and fuel handling systems  of welding and soldering machines;  up-stream of the IThE manual isolating valve. This European Standard is not applicable to electricity cabling and power cabling upstream of the IThE control panel/protective system. Noise can be a significant hazard for combustion and fuel handling systems. It is not dealt with in this standard. This European Standard is not applicable to combustion and fuel handling systems as part of IThE which is manufactured before the date of its publication as EN.

These systems, commonly referred to using terms such as furnaces, melters, ovens, and heaters, use heat sources such as fuels, electricity, steam or other fluids to supply the required heat. This Standard sets the requirements for conducting and reporting the results of a process heating energy assessment (hereafter referred to as an "assessment") that considers the entire system, from energy inputs to the work performed as the result of these inputs. An assessment meeting this standard need not address each individual system component or specific system within an industrial facility with equal weight; however, it shall be sufficiently comprehensive to identify the major energy efficiency opportunities for improving the overall energy performance of the system. This Standard is designed to be applied primarily at industrial facilities, but many of the concepts can be used in other facilities such as those in the institutional and commercial sectors.

This Standard specifies the safety requirements for the heat utilization equipment (industrial combustion furnaces and so on) heated by gaseous fuel and liquid fuel in the industrial field as shown in the following a) to d). Further, this Standard specifies the requirements for the manufacturer to secure the safety of person and equipment against serious hazards specified in Annex B such as predictable mistakes and malfunctions which can occur in the course of trial operation, operation, and maintenance. a) Equipment of metallurgic and metallic processing plant b) Equipment of glass manufacturing plant Equipment in ceramics manufacturing plant d) Equipment in cement, quicklime and gypsum manufacturing plant The details of heat utilization equipment in the industrial field shall be in accordance with Annex A. This Standard shall not be applied to the equipment in chemical plant and petroleum plant, the incineration system of waste, the blast furnace and converter in iron manufacturing plant, the ambient gas generating equipment generating flammable gas and the ambient gas, the equipment for burning in open space, and the equipment containing the combustibles generated from heated materials.

This European Standard specifies the terminology, the general requirements for the construction and operation of automatic forced draught gas burners and also the provision of control and safety devices, and the test procedure for these burners. This standard is applicable to ID automatic gas burners with a combustion air fan (hereinafter called "burners") as described in 3.1.2 and gas line components, intended for use in appliances of different types, and that are operated with gaseous fuels; -- total pre-mixed burners and nozzle mixed burners. The standard is applicable to -- single burners with a single combustion chamber; -- single-fuel and dual-fuel burners when operating only on gas; -- gas function of dual-fuel burners designed to operate simultaneously on gaseous and liquid fuels. This European Standard deals with all significant machine hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to burners, when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer, see Annex J. This European Standard specifies the requirements to be met by the manufacturer to ensure the safety during commissioning, start-up, operation, shut-down and maintenance. This European Standard does not deal with hazards due to specific applications. This European Standard is not applicable to automatic forced draught gas burners which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN. This European Standard does not apply to burners specifically designed for use in industrial processes carded out on industrial premises. This European Standard deals also with the additional requirements for the burners in the scope with pressurised parts and/or firing pressurised bodies, see Annex K.
