This part of IEC 60255 is applicable to measuring relays and protection equipment for power system protection, including the control, monitoring and process interface equipment used with those systems. This standard specifies the essential requirements for electromagnetic compatibility for measuring relays and protection equipment intended to be used at industrial locations. Measuring relays and protection equipment used in substations and power plants may require higher immunity test levels. For equipment not incorporating electronic circuits, for example electromechanical relays, tests according to this standard are not required. The requirements specified in this standard are applicable to measuring relays and protection equipment in a new condition and all tests specified are type tests only. 1.1 Emission The object of this standard is to specify limits and test methods, for measuring relays and protection equipment in relation to electromagnetic emissions which may cause interference in other equipment. These emission limits represent electromagnetic compatibility essential requirements and have been selected to ensure that the disturbances generated by measuring relays and protection equipment, operated normally in substations and power plants, do not exceed a level which could prevent other equipment from operating as intended. Test requirements are specified for the enclosure and power supply ports. 1.2 Immunity The object of this standard is to specify the essential immunity test requirements for measuring relays and protection equipment in relation to continuous and transient, conducted and radiated disturbances, including electrostatic discharges. These test requirements represent the essential electromagnetic compatibility immunity requirements selected to ensure an adequate level of immunity for measuring relays and protection equipment. NOTE 1 Safety considerations are not covered in this standard. NOTE 2 In special cases, situations will arise where the levels of disturbance may exceed the levels specified in this standard, for example where a hand-held transmitter is used in close proximity to measuring relays and protection equipment. In these instances, special precautions may have to be employed.

This part of IEC 60255 is based on IEC 61000-4-3, referring to that publication where applicable, and specifies the general requirements for radiated electromagnetic field immunity tests for measuring relays and protection equipment for power system protection, including the control, monitoring and process interface equipment used with those systems. The objective of the tests is to confirm that the equipment under test (EUT) will operate correctly when energised and subjected to an electromagnetic field from a radiation source operating within the frequency range 80 MHz to 2,7 GHz. NOTE 1 The product standard IEC 60255-22-6 (based on IEC 61000-4-6) establishes the immunity of measuring relays and protection equipment over the frequency range of 0,15 MHz to 80 MHz. NOTE 2 The test methods defined in this standard are structured for the primary objective of establishing adequate repeatability of results at various test facilities for qualitative analysis of effects. The test methods using a portable transmitter1 are not taken into consideration here because the EMC directive now specifies a sweep test, calibrated field strengths must be used and the portable transmitter test is not generally reproducible. The requirements specified in this standard are applicable to measuring relays and protection equipment in a new condition, and all tests specified are type tests only.

This part is based on: ~ IEC 61000-4-11 for a.c. voltage dips, short interruptions and variations; ~ IEC 61000-4-17 for voltage ripple; ~ IEC 61000-4-29 for d.c. voltage dips, short interruptions and variations. The objective of the tests is to confirm that the equipment under test will operate correctly when energised and subjected to dips, interruptions and alternating components (ripple). This part of IEC 61810 applies to electromechanical elementary relays (non-specified time allor- nothing relays) for incorporation into equipment. It defines the basic functional requirements and safety-related aspects for applications in all areas of electrical engineering or electronics, such as: • general industrial equipment, • electrical facilities, • electrical machines, • electrical appliances for household and similar use, • information technology and business equipment, • building automation equipment, • automation equipment, • electrical installation equipment, • medical equipment, • control equipment, • telecommunications, • vehicles, • transportation (e.g. railways). Compliance with the requirements of this standard is verified by the type tests indicated. In case the application of a relay determines additional requirements exceeding those specified in this standard, the relay should be assessed in line with this application in accordance with the relevant IEC standard(s) (e.g. IEC 60730-1, IEC 60335-1, IEC 60950-1).

This PAS specifies reliability test procedures for electromechanical elementary relays when enhanced requirements for the verification of reliability apply. Particular provisions are given for relays incorporated in safety-related control systems of machinery in accordance with IEC 62061 and ISO 13849-1. For such relays Ble values for dangerous failures (B values) are derived from the tests specified in this PAS. This specification is only intended to be used in conjunction with IEC 61810-2.
